My 9 year old cat, Nina, has had all the symptoms of diabetes for a few weeks. The vet thought it might be related to a cortisone shot so we waited but the increased thirst and urine are still occurring. Today he tested her without fasting and her number was 385. A month ago, before the cortisone shot, it was 185 on a fast.

He suggested we start her on Fancy Feast classic wet food and check her sugar again in 3 weeks. After reading things on this forum, I think I need to start home testing ASAP so I get a handle on what her numbers really are, before I go to an insulin regime?

Thoughts? Thanks
Colleen

I definitely think home testing now is a great idea. It is possible that the low carb diet will really reduce her numbers and you can see if that happens. Three weeks is quite a while to wait for insulin, but if she drops, it could be fine.

If you're in the US, pick up a WalMart ReliOn Confirm or Confirm Micro, matching test strips, and 26-28 gauge lancets.

Not a fan of WalMart? Go to the top of the screen and click on the Shop Button, then click on ADW. Look for the Glucocard 01 and 01 mini which are the same meter, just not branded for WalMart. They also do bulk orders which may save you money, expecially if you sign up with http://MrRebates.com
