Glucose Number Confusion

Hi, My Egyption Mau, Isis, was diagnosed 2 weeks ago. We started her on a low dose of Glargine and it took us a week to successfully get enough blood from her ear to test. When we did, her number was 2.3! We have completely stopped the insulin since then but have remained on Purina DM cat food. Her highest number last week was 8.9 but three times, several hours after eating, she has gone to 3 or less. Now I am wondering if I should try to find a food a little higher in carbs. Has anyone out there got any advice on this? She has not shown any physical effects from the low glucose and when I feed her, her number goes up to 4-5.
Thanks

Is that DM dry cat food? That is about as high as you can get. Most of the time we feed canned cat food that are low carbs.

Others will chime in with more experience but if you are not giving insulin and the cat should naturally regulate itself- 2.3 (41.4 for us in the US) is a low number to us but could be a great number for a regulated cat off insulin. The 8.9 comes to 160.2, a little high for a no-insulin cat, but most would consider it okay.

Your sugar baby might already be broken and in need of no insulin. You could keep her on a low carb diet successfully without insulin.

How long since her last shot?
Without any shots, her body won't force the bg to go down to hypoglycemic numbers, so even a 40 is fine. Normal for a cat is 40-120.
The last thing you want to do if she is off insulin is to feed higher carb food.

Also, if she is dropping from 8 or 9 down to 3 without shots, her body is doing a pretty good job of self-regulating. The lower her carb intake, the more likely it is that this will continue to happen.

What is the dose? Is it 1 unit twice a day? Or something else? It's hard to know what might be going on without that information.

She was on 1 unit of the insulin twice a day but it has been 9 days since her last shot. The food she is on is canned Purina DM and I just picked up a raw chicken based food to suppliment it. The vet told me the ideal glucose number for a diabetic cat in remission is between 6 and 10 so have been a bit paniced when she falls to 3 or less. She seems well and is starting to gain back some weight.

I don't believe she can hypo when she isn't getting insulin. You may have a "broken" diabetic cat - meaning she is no longer diabetic. I hope some others who know more will chime in soon.
