Glucose levels...question?

We (Louie and I) are new to this.....just 4 days in, and I have questions about glucose levels. Is it normal for a newly diagnosed diabetic kitty to have high levels that go up and down dramatically at first? How long does it usually take to regulate the glucose levels? I hope I can wean off calling my vet and figure out how to determine how much insulin to give Louie.
I feel so much better thanks to the kind people who have welcomed us and given words of comfort and encouragement...!

Welcome! It would help us a lot to have some more info about Louie. (Beautiful boy BTW) What insulin is he on and what is the dose?

Some insulins are harsher than others and send the bg levels down fast and then go fast again. Most members here use Lantus, Levemir or ProZinc as they tend to be milder and last longer.

Sue,

Louie is on Lantus, I believe.

With Lantus it takes about 5 days for the initial dose to 'settle' since it needs to build up a depot under the skin, at first most of the dose goes to build that depot or "shed" before Louie can access the insulin to help bring down his BGs. That is why when we increase or decrease a dose we hold that dose for at least 3 days before re-evaluating if it needs to be raised or lowered again.
