Glucosamine question

Weezer has a little hitch in her giddy-up when she first gets up. Sort of like me :?. I thought maybe a glucosamine treat might help, but the one variety I have on hand (Glyco-flex II Feline) says to consult vet for animals with (long list of conditions) diabetes. Does glucosamine in general carry risks for sugarcats or should I look for a different variety?

That's a great question and unfortunately, there's no black and white answer. Until more research is done, the decision is really based on how frequently you can test and monitor if a change is happening.

Some research had suggested that glucosamine might worsen insulin resistance, which can contribute to increases in blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes (which is also the type that cats have). However, other studies refute these findings and claim there is no notable affect.

So should diabetics use glucosamine? Consider the possible side effects (eg. digestive upset, headaches, drowsiness, bleeding tendencies) as well as the possibility that the blood sugar levels may increase. And know that close supervision is a must until you know how it affects your kitty.

If you decide to include glucosamine as part of your therapy, more frequent monitoring of blood glucose levels can show how your kitty's body is reacting. You would need to keep everything else consistent (food, dose, etc. so that you can isolate any changes).

As FYI - I have a dog that I've given Glucosamine to since he was 6 mos old. He's not diabetic, but we've never had a single side effect problem and now at 14 years old, 100 lbs....I believe it's made a huge difference in his life. It's a great supplement with many benefits, so if you can supervise and keep things consistent while you're trying it out - I'd give it a big thumbs up.

I started giving Curry cosequin for the same reason. She started right when she was going off the juice. She's been stable and not had any side-effects.

Thanks for the info. We hope to change to Lantus soon, so I think I'll wait until she stabilizes on that before adding anything else into the mix.

I would wait if starting a new insulin...
I started Shakes on it and his numbers went pretty high until I took him off
so in my opinion yes it does affect the numbers

My Charlie is on cosequin (1 cap/day) with no noticeable change in bg numbers. But ECID. The possible benefits outweighed the risks in his case, and so far I am liking the results. The longer I can keep him comfortable without pain meds, the better, IMO. My vet did a lot of research before letting me try it on him. Supposedly the glucose in it is so tightly bound that the body generally doesn't metabolize it as a sugar, so it shouldn't affect the bg levels. But I agree with the other--one change at a time. First insulin, then you can try cosequin.
