Gizzy - Increased desire for water

Hi Guys....I have a general question. In the last few days Gizzy has really been drinking a lot of water and jumping on the sinks and tub to get some. He hasn't done this since he was first diagnosed in 2008. His output is the same.... He has lost weight too. I have him scheduled for his annual exam in 2 weeks, but just wondering if I should be taking him in before that as I suspect something is up. Or is there something I can test for him at home?? I have been brushing it off since his #'s have jumped to red a few times this week, but now I'm not so sure I should be ignoring it.

i don't know lori. i looked at his ss but don't know enough to comment on anything. i suppose his higher numbers might be causing the increased thirst, but he hit in the 20's night before last, so ?

no answers, but this will at least bump it up for some more experienced eyes.

Hey Lori,

I don't have any answers for you either - How about you post this question over on "Health" as well?

BK was like that when we first took him in, however once we started him on insulin it resolved pretty quick and in spite of his consistently high numbers back then that kind of thirst/behavior didn't return.

I'm concerned about the weight loss and am I understanding that although he is drinking more his output has not increased?
How is his appy? Have you checked for ketones?

HUGE appetite - would eat constantly if I let him!
I will check for ketones - good idea. Now I just have to be home to catch him in the box!
I changed him to a raw diet (the cooked kind) and he has drank more since I took him off the canned FF. The canned has more water in it. I'm running low on his food, so I thought I may switch him back to the FF and see what happens.

I can tell something is up with him though - he's uncomfortable. But it may be that we are getting close to his next Adaquan shot and his arthiritis is bothering him?? I don't know!

Hi, if it's possible to get Gizzy in earlier, I think it's what I would do. I wonder about the losing weight. Good luck and I hope it's just the switch to raw that may be making Gizzy thirsty.

Do you know what the moisture content is in the food your giving? Ditto regarding salt content.

If you're due to bring Gizzy in for an annual check up, why not do it a little early so your mind's at rest?

Ketones were normal! Yeah.
I was trying to time his annual exam date with the day he's due for his next Adaquan shot so I didn't have to take him in twice. But they may be able to give him that earlier. I'd be curious to know if that would change anything.
He seems to be most uncomfortable when he tries to lay down so I'm thinking it's his arthritis, but i will take him in to be sure.
