a couple questions. lets say shot times r 8 am and 8 pm. if u know u r going out one evening at 5 and wont be home until 10....do u test early? and give the shot early? or test/shoot late? if shot is needed?
also, if u think u will be home by 8, and dont get home until 10, again, do u just do everything the same since its later? or do u skip the night shot? i dont have any1 who can fill in, in my absence.
thanks for the help.

Re: giving shots

It can depend on the insulin.

Lantus and Levemir really need consistency in timing; you can shoot later, and move back 30 min per day to the original time.

ProZinc lets you adjust the dose so you could shoot a booster early and the remainder later ... if you test it out and know your cat will be safe. Otherwise, just shoot late. Move back to the regular time 30 min per day OR you can give a smaller dose to get back on schedule.

Re: giving shots

With the Lantus, giving an early shot is like giving a dose increase. Giving a late shot is like giving a dose reduction. Those are just some generalizations. You need to test to know how your cat reacts.

There are options to dosing the Lantus. Some people may give a reduced dose if they need to shoot early. It depends on the test numbers and when the normal nadir time is.

Some people skip the shot, know that their kitty will be much higher at the next shot time, and then get back on a more normal schedule.

When you have some test data, and know how your cat will react, then you'll have a better idea of when the nadir is and how those early and late shots will affect your kitty. Know thy cat.

Re: giving shots

a big thanks to u both! i had been receiving email notes when i got messages but i didnt on these 2 so i did not know u had responded. we r still on humulin N, at least until this bottle runs out or we figure out a way to get lantus. (long story!) at any rate, i am still a little confused. i guess once i can test him, it wont be confusing, bc i will dose him by his reading. i have difficulty processing a lot of written info, especially things that r brand new. i forgot what nadir is. maybe if i read ur posts a few more times i can get it to sink in.

Re: giving shots

. i forgot what nadir is
Nadir is the lowest point in the insulin cycle. It can vary from cycle to cycle. It is usually different for every cat. The nadir is different for different insulins also.

With the Humulin N, the nadir or low point is most likely somewhere around +3 to +5 ( That +3 is 3 hours after the insulin shot, +5 is 5 hours after the insulin shot).

Yes, there is a lot of information here for you. We are here to help you every step of the way. Don't be afraid to ask questions or ask us to clarify and keep it simple.

Sometimes, the email notifications don't seem to work. So, it's a good idea to check back when you can, to see if you have any replies.

ETA: If you add the insulin you are using to your signature (where you put the P&L), it will be there on every post.

Re: giving shots/ humulin N new questions 2/8

since i am using N, how would i go abt this? i have a day coming up where i will prob. be gone abt 5-10. very rare, but it happens. do i just start at 10, or 10:30 the hr. long process i normally do at 9? PS, feed, shoot? makes me not wna go. wont get any sleep that night, and going out is hard on me anyway. usually come home and collapse. i guess theres no way around this tho? just do it all late?

Re: giving shots

2nd question.... i think i did something wrong on larrys shot today :( he was laying with Baby, the love of his life, my 14 yr old girl :) and i didnt want to get them both up. i figured id lay on the floor and lean over him. i went for approx the same area as usual, but he jumped, got up, and walked away. acted like it hurt :( if i hit a vein or something, will it kill him? :'( going in to bloodstream too fast? or just painful?
thanks!
he doesnt have much scruff he is so big, so i put him on the table normaly and when he leans over, there is good scruff above his front legs (arms) idk how to explain it, but its all the loose skin i can really find on him.
thank u!

Re: giving shots

It shouldn't hurt him to get a shot, Pam. He may have just been surprised or annoyed (you were cutting into his cuddle time  ).

Re: giving shots

Theo sometimes makes a sad, pathetic meow when I shoot him. It's really not more than a pinch, but Theo is a spoiled darling who doesn't even get rough housed on a regular basis. I think he's more annoyed by me pinching up his scruff than the needle poke. He's offended when anyone treats him like anything other than a sacred princeling. :)

Re: giving shots

thanks to u both.
this was diff. and i did do the shot a little diff. i hope i didnt hit a vein or anything. giving myself shots i have done that, and evn with the longer needle, forgot what its called. nearly had tears streaming down my face.
yea hes a sensitive boy but i do know him well. something was off. it was like the 1st 2 shots i gave, in beginning. its something i did/do wrong. idk?
do u all pull up the stopper and chk for blood every time?

Re: giving shots

do u all pull up the stopper and chk for blood every time?
No, I never did this with Wink. Just seemed like an unnecessary step and he was already annoyed enough with the shot.

I did check, by running my hand thru his fur, to feel for any wet spots. This would have meant I'd miss getting all the insulin in and I'd note it on his SS.

new question! what if its shot time and kitty wont eat? or only half a can of food? this is a bit odd.
also he is at 399 which would mean 2.25 but if meter can vary 20 percent that means he could be lower and then u dose for 399? confused.
confused_cat
thanks

I wouldn't worry about the 20% variance, Pam. Just go with the number you see or you'll drive yourself crazy.

Has he been eating normally today? Acting normal?

pretty normal. none of the wild silly stuff. just laid around mostly, and a bit calmer than many days. that could be good or bad.
well with him eating less and also if i go up to 2.25 i didnt wna take any chances.

already gave it. i am still new. i want to do the very best for my angel. a lot of things r confusing or dont make sense to me tho. i still have to ask questions.
many times others were worried when i wasnt, so i wntd to see if this mattered. i dont know unless i ask.
still wondering abt the food part, too?

Absolutely ask questions when there is anything you are worried about.

I don't know about the food. It could be he is isn't the mood for the flavor, or he feels a little off or he is feeling good and just isn't as hungry as he has been. Unless he refuses to eat or he throws up, I wouldn't worry.

ok sue, ty. i meant a 1/4 can of food. i cant see well. halo effect tonight. doin my best
hope u have a good night.
