Gingivitis... Help

I have a question, took max to the vet this morning, he has severe gingivitis, wouldn't eat and gums bleeding gave him antibiotic and steroid shots. I have read that virgin coconut oil will help either given orally, rubbed on gum, licked off paw, or mixed in with wet food. Anyone else know anything about this or how much to give??

I personally have never heard of that working... is it possible to have a dental done? Is the blood work ok??
Sounds like he would feel much better and for some reason diabetics respond very well to having clean teeth....
They do make products that have enzymes that break down the tarter (Ark Naturals breath zapper)
But nothing replaces a real dental...if healthy enough of course...
