? Getting Newly Diagnosed Kitty on Schedule

Hi folks,
Some of you may have read my last post about Miss Bula and I being new to feline diabetes.
You were very helpful with my last question/concern.
My new question has to do with getting kitty on a new schedule.
I used to feed her 3 times a day and now she is down to twice a day.
She literally starts screaming at me for food at her old dinner time (about 5 PM) but is not due for her next feed and insulin shot until 9 PM.
How long does it take them to get into the new routine?
She is quite insistent and gets the dog going too. (I feed them both at the same time).

You'll get more eyes on your post if you preface the thread title with a question mark icon (look in "thread tools" to lower right of title). The short answer is that many of us feed multiple times a day even though the vet told us at diagnosis to feed only twice a day.
 
You can feed her at least two hours before her next shot is due. Until she is regulated, she will continue to be hungry because her body is not processing the food correctly. If you need to feed her several small meals during the day, that is fine.
 
If she's hungry, feed her. You do need to feed before shot times in the morning and evening, but it's fine to feed in between times too... Just pick up the food two hours before you will do your preshot test.
 
Thanks Everyone, It seems I need an adjustment period too.
I slept in this morning and was an hour late with her food and injection.
Time to set an alarm to go off twice a day!!!
 
Hi All, 11 days after diagnosis and we are doing well.
I noticed after the change in food and before starting insulin, there was ALOT less urine in the litter box.
The injections are going well. She doesn't even flinch.
Bula and Ceili (the dog) are getting used to their new feeding schedule.
We go in at the end of the week for a check up and check in.

The only issues I'd say we are having is giving the injections at the exact same time every day.
All have been within an hour window max... usually I am able to stay within a 15 minute window.
Life such as doctor's appointment and ferry schedules have gotten in the way making me 30 minutes late on 2 occasions.

Everyone is a bit off with the time sometimes. Glad it's going well. Have you started testing yet?
