Hello everyone,
I know I have not posted in awhile but Catee was actually doing quite well since the beginning of 2014. He has been OTJ since about July 2013. He never really went on it as I was able to get him regulated with Young Again Zero Carb. Well he stopped eating it at the first of 2014 because of an problem I had (it is in an old post). I finally got him to eating Purina DM and his blood sugar was under control. 80 to 110. I got to where I was only taking his BG weekly. He seem to be doing fine. I took him to a new vet and was given the advice that since his blood sugars are now good that I did not have to feed him the low carb food any longer. I was suspicious but I have a friend that said their Vet told them that if their blood sugars were good after 1 year then the cat was consider not to be a diabetic and could go back on "regular" food.
I know I should have asked here first and it is my fault. I started putting out some grain free food for Catee along with the Purina DM. He continued on his Purina DM for a couple weeks only eating a few bites of the grain free. He finally then went totally on the grain free food. I was testing him weekly during this time and his sugars were staying about the same. In October I got sick and was not able to test him but only twice. So he went about a 2 weeks eating the grain free food and probably a month eating both.
Sigh, so this all happened last week. I noticed that he seemed to have lost a little weight. I kept asking family and friends about how he looked and they told me he look fine. Then it started, the drinking and urinating a lot. The urinating, he is not going frequently but when he goes it is a big clump. I started last Thursday taking his blood sugar every 12 hours. It was in the high end of 200's. I switched him back to only Purina DM and it is in the lower end of 200s. I've also tried to get him to eat Young Again food but he will only eat a bite. Not enough to keep him going. So I've put out Purina DM and EVO. Hoping he will go for the EVO since it is lower than Purina. So far he hasn't ate it either. He is sticking to his Purina DM. I just took his BG a while ago and it was 205.
He is starting not to act right. Going to spots to lay that he usually does not and is running into things (he has done this since he was first diagnosed but it has gotten worse, I believe something happened to his eyesight). He seems a little better today though.
So, my question is, how long would it take for his blood sugar to get back down to where it was? Or should I go ahead and take him to the Vet to get some insulin to bring it down?
I feel awful about this and totally blame myself. I would greatly appreciate any help.
Dani
