the best spot to prick the ear is in the sweet spot, see link, take a small sock and fill it with rice with a knot, place it on the inside of the ear, make sure you have all the tools ready in front of you, I use a small flashlight, that I place in my mouth to be able to see where I am inserting the lancet pinch the ear, as soon as it comes out, I pick up the monitor with the strip in it, and pick up the blood, I use the ReliOn Premier monitor and strips, they are inexpensive and do not require too much blood, just the on the tip. I hope this can help you also for us to help you along the way please create your signature and spreadsheet (links below), we need to know more like what insulin you are using the dose what are you feeding etc, it is explained in the link help us help you, you are in the right place we, also it is great that you are home testing and testing before shooting, you will need what is called a HYPO KIT, this will contain some wet can food between 11-15% carbs and some High carb foods between 16-24% carbs in case his glucose number go below 50, we can guide how to stabilize the BG. Diabetic cats need to consume wet cab foods between 0-10%, dry food (kibbles) and treats, even the "prescribed" food have between 25-35% carbs, the Dr's Food list link below, has many brands to choose from the third column contains the carb%, it is overwhelming at first, but it is manageable, I trust this Forum blindly, make sure to create your signature, also there many sticky notes in the Main Forum that has a lot of valuable information:bighug::cat::cat:

I have a sock with rice in it, where is the sweet spot. It has been several years since I had a diabetic cat and I can't seem to remember anything.

@Teresa & Buddy
Always aim for the sweet spot warm the ears up first, you can put rice in a sock and put it in the microwave, test it on the inside of your wrist to be sure it's not to hot, like you would test a babies bottle. You can fill a pill bottle with warm water and roll it on the ears also.Just keep rubbing the ears with your fingers to warm them up

6. As the ears get used to bleeding and grow more capilares, it gets easier to get the amount of blood you need on the first try. If he won’t stand still, you can get the blood onto a clean finger nail and test from there.
When you do get some blood you can try milking the ear.
Get you finger and gently push up toward the blood , more will appear
You will put the cotton round behind his ear in case you poke your finger, after you are done testing you will fold the cotton round over his ear to stop the bleeding , press gently for about 10 or 20 seconds until it stops
Get 26 or 28 gauge lancets
A lot of us use the lancets to test freehand not the lancing device
I find it better to see where I'm aiming
Look at the lancet under a light and you will see one side is curved upward, that's the side you want to poke with

Try putting a thin layer of Vaseline on the ear so the blood will bead up

I forgot to say the vet put Kit Kat on vetsulin, I see tyler was on vetsulin and you changed to Lantus. Was there a reason why, Kat kat has only had 2 doses, 1 yesterday and 1 today, he is right now only once a day getting insulin.

Lantus is a better insulin, Vetsulin is usually used for dogs.
It might be helpful if you can start a spreadsheet and signature for Kit Kat . I got him into remission on Lantus for 3 years and 4 months before he passed from cancer
I'm going to tag a few experienced members for you to give you their advice
If you do switch down the road you will need U-100 syringes with the half unit markings

This is where you can set up what we call your signature, it's at the end of everyone's post in gray letters. Just tap on your name up top then tap on signature and add this information. You will link it to your spreadsheet

  • Add info we need to help you:
    • Caregiver & kitty's name
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin (do not include dose or frequency)
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Bexacat or Senvelgo (if applicable) and dates
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

Can you set up our spreadsheet , we use it to track our cats BG This link will tell you how to set it up and explain how to use it

A couple of other things.
With vetsulin you need to feed 30 minutes before the insulin is given. So you test, feed, wait 30 minutes then give the dose. This is because vetsulin hits hard and fast and your kitty needs food aboard to cope with the drop.
Also I would give another snack at +3 each cycle.
I would also consider swapping to another insulin such as Lantus or Prozinc. They are recommended by the American Animal Association and Vetsulin is not. Vetsulin is actually a dog insulin and not suitable for cats because cats have a faster metabolism than dogs.

I wondered why he put him on vetsulin, maybe that is the only insulin he had that day. I would much rather Kit Kat have ProZinc or lantus than vetsulin. I am going to call him on Monday, to see if he will change him.

For Lantus, your vet writes a prescription and you get it filled at a human pharmacy. Some vets are just more used to treating diabetic dogs, so more used to Vetsulin. See if you can get switched to Lantus or even Prozinc. I see you have previous experience with both and both are suitable for cats.

I have not gotten ahold of our vet yet. I forgot I had something that had to be done on Monday and Tuesday was my Birthday. Kit Kat is only getting 1 unit of Vetsulin once a day. I don't think he is starting him on insulin, like most vets do. When Buddy became diabetic, he put him on 2 doses a day and he put him on Prozinc. Later, we changed him to Lantus. I think, he is seeing if this will help his weak back legs. Anyway, I am going to call him.

Can you start a new spreadsheet for Kit Kat? Once a day Vetsulin likely isn't doing much for him. It doesn't last 12 hours. Do you have any BG numbers for him yet?

If he has weak back legs, are you giving him methyl B12 or Zobaline?

Which do you think would be the best for his hind legs Zobaline or Methylcobalamin. I have a bottle in my hands of Vitamin B12 underneath Methylcobalamin 5,000 mcg, this was Buddy's and it expired 03/23. It has a warning saying diabetics and other conditions should consult their physician. Which would you get if this was your cat. I have left a message for his doctor the last 2 days, I called there a short while ago and they said both doctors were going into a emergency. However, Kit Kat needs something for his legs and when I talk to him I will let him know about the insulin. Right now, I am wanting something for his legs.

My vet just called and he had never heard of Zobaline, but it gets good ratings, I have a bottle of B12 with Methyl here but it expired 03/23. I will just wait until Diane Tyler's Mom answers. I have to go to the basement be back in a little while.

Hi Teresa
I used to give Tyler
See below
the Vitacost brand another member told me about
Vitamin B-12 Methylcobalamin -- 5000 mcg - 100 Capsules

Same as Zobaline , but the Zobaline is so expensive as you know
This is the same thing
The only difference is the Zobaline has 200 mcgs of folic acid
So I bought the folic acid at the supermarket and crush it up and added it to the Vitacost brand
If you can't find the 200 mcg get the 400 mcg and cut it in half and crush it up and add it, some members didn't even add the folic acid and the neuropathy improved
The Vitacost brand is a capsule so just open it and pour the powder on the wet food
Has no taste, no need to crush it up, I still give it to Tyler every now and then and he has never tasted it in his food , I always add water to his food and just stir up the methyl B-12 good
I switched to the vitacost brand because the zobaline was too expensive,
Even though the vitacost brand is 5000 mcgs and the zobaline is 3000 mcgs
What they don't need they will pee out because it's water soluble.

The Zobaline is expensive for 60 pills, 30.00 some other places want 33.00
I used to use the Zobaline when I joined, then a member told me about the Vitacost brand .

It took about 2 months for Tyler to get back to walking normal, jumping on to the couch, running around
But every few weeks I did see a slight improvement
Some members didn't even add the folic acid to the vitacost brand and it still helped and the neuropathy was gone

14.49 for 100 capsules

I have some of the same vitamin-b-12-methyl here, that I bought Buddy for pancreatitis, but it expired on 03/22. I talked to Kit Kat's vet and it said go ahead and give it to him until I can get the new in.

How many capsules a day did you Tyler of the Vitacost brand, I was thinking of putting it on auto order but you would not want it every 30 days if you only gave 1 a day.
