+30 minutes AMPS 292 - gave 1.5 units insulin

Glad I waited a half hour and checked again! I hope the 1.5 units is ok, as 1.75 kept him too low again maybe this will be just right for tonight?

Have a vet appt. in 4 hours, will see what the she thinks as well.

Did he eat in that half an hour? That's a quick rise in just 30 minutes...

Let us know what the vet has to say!

+3.5 AMPS/+3 insulin 288

Carl - I fed George 1/2 of a 5.5oz can of food, waited 10 minutes and checked his BG and got the 172, I then fed him another 1/4 of the can (usually I would give him his insulin while he eats this 1/4 as he's distracted and doesn't notice the shot) - so I guess maybe in the 1/2 hour between checks the 3/4 of a 5.5oz can began digesting?

Also, I fed him the remaining 1/4 can of food about 20 minutes before getting this BG check, any way that added to there not being much of a drop?

All right, off to the vet!

Well that was a bust  They couldn't get enough urine to make sure the UTI was completely gone so I have to take him back tmw, he's somehow lost even more weight (down to 10.14 lbs from 10.4 lbs pre-infection - this is a cat that used to weigh 16 lbs) even though we're feeding him more than we were before the UTI, and based on the full blood panel they ran when determining the UTI the vet has no idea why he's losing weight as the blood panel showed no major illness....other than diabetes of course ;-) She agreed his numbers look good and said to give him no more than 2 units (although based on what we've been seeing here I'll probably try 1.5 and see how it does), she said to keep an eye on his weight over the next 2 weeks and if it doesn't seem to be any better she'll do a test that Texas A&M runs for intestinal/stomach issues.

I wish I knew what the heck was going on in his little bony body, his numbers are better, he certainly doesn't lack an appetite, he still seems happy (other than wanting food all the time), and yet I can't get him to gain any weight  I have to say, based on his former stature, getting George to gain weight was not a problem I thought I'd ever have!

Debating getting some Royal Canin Recovery and feeding him that for a few days just to see if I can get some weight back on him, anyone else have any ways they've been able to safely get a diabetic cat to gain weight?

Perhaps feed him a bit more food each feeding, to help him gain weight and since he's always hungry...just a thought.

I know Poopy ate like a horse before and after being diagnosed. When I switched to canned, I basically free fed for a while as he was putting weight back on. Made for interesting BGs though, not being able to tell how much was food related. Then I learned to pull up the food a couple hours before testing. ohmygod_smile

It's funny...they are the ones with the disease, yet we seem to do the most dancing.

Hahaha agreed!

As far as food sadly I have been feeding him more and he's lost weight! I originally fed him 2 5.5oz cans a day, then I added an extra 1/4 of an additional can per feeding and now I feed him 1 1/2 5.5oz cans per feeding so now he's getting 3 5.5oz cans a day  The cans say to feed 1oz per pound of body weight so originally we fed him the 2 cans as he was 11 lbs but then we wanted him to gain so we added basically an extra 3 ozs a day and now that we've added the full can he's getting 16.5 ozs of food a day and he's down to 10.14 lbs  I've tried giving him other wet foods besides BFF but he won't eat them, I've tried putting FortiFlora on them but it doesn't make a difference so I don't know what to do food-wise to fatten him up?

PMPS 115 - no insulin

My husband is going to check him again at +1 PMPS and see if he's high enough for .5 units to get him through tonight.

Sue, just realized HyperT probably means hyperthyroid - when we ran the blood panel 2 weeks ago I asked the vet about his thyroid and she said it was ok so I assumed they tested it but I'm honestly not sure, will have to ask when I take him back for the urine check.

He is doing very well! Great numbers.

HyperT cats sometimes have trouble keeping weight on - that's what made me think of it. But if the vet tested for it, it probably isn't a concern.

I agree that feeding a little more is a good idea to see if his weight increases.

Just got back from the vet, thankfully George had urine this time, weird thing to be happy about :-D I asked about his thyroid results from his previous blood work and they looked over the results again and said his levels were ok so unless he somehow developed hyperthyroidism in the last two weeks I guess that's not the cause of his weight loss. On the one hand I'm glad it's not his thyroid because if what I read was correct unless he has surgery it's a lifelong issue, but at the same time, if it's not his thyroid then I still don't know why he won't gain weight :? Also, as far as feeding him more as we're already feeding him 3 5.5oz cans of food a day (and he's lost weight since we started doing that) I'm not really sure how much more to feed him

There definitely are other things that can cause weight loss in cats, but for now, I would just try to find a higher calorie, low carb count food that he likes and feed him more of it. If it continues, you could explore some other things like IBD or pancreatitis, but they have specific symptoms that I haven't heard that you have seen in George.

I am so glad to see George's numbers lower over all. :-D Once he gets settled into a dose (having shootable PS numbers), hopefully his mid-cycle numbers will be lower too, depending on how the food effects the numbers.

I sure hope he starts gaining weight.

Yeah I'm definitely pleased with his numbers and am hoping maybe 1.5 or 1.25 could be the dose?

As far as high calorie low carb foods what are some recommendations? As far as wet foods I've tried Fancy Feast, Newman's Own, EVO, Friskie's, and I'm not sure what else, but they were all met with what seemed like an interested sniff and then an immediate dismissal, despite repeated attempts on my part to try and get him to eat the food - how can a cat that is so hungry so decisively ignore food?? FortiFlora hasn't helped so I'm at a loss right now...

Other than Royal Canin Recovery he doesn't seem to like pate-style wet foods; the BFF is meaty with shredded strips of chicken or various fish, I have to say it does look more appetizing than most of the foods I've tried to give him ;-)

When I first switched to all canned, my civvie Mia was having none of it. They were used to canned food as a treat and having dry out 24/7. After a couple of days of only having wet offered, Mia started eating with gusto, poor hungry baby. Obviously not something we want to have to go through with our sugar babies, though.

I feed Special Kitty Supper Super and Mixed Grill (both with 4% carbs) with the occasional Tuna (7% carbs) and Turkey and Giblets (0% carbs). When Sophisticats, now Grrreat Choice, is on sale, I'll get the same type flavors. I add enough water to make "gravy" for the food, which Poopy also loves. I also give Poopy 1/2 inch square raw chicken chunks as a treat. Not only does he LOVE the raw meat, it's good for his teeth.

Finding a food both momma beans and sugar kitties like can be a hit and miss adventure. Eventually you'll find just the right food. :-D

Special Kitty is from Wal-Mart (.70 a can for 13 oz.) and Grrreat Choice, was Sophisticat, from Petsmart (.72 a can for 13 oz.). In my signature is a link to Janet and Binky's Food List, with the carb information for tons of brands and flavors, in case you need to check out brands.
