GE100 - What results should I expect?

My cat was diagnosed on Tuesday with some ups and downs between then and now. I was able to get a GE100 blood glucose monitor so I can check my cat before his insulin shot. What numbers should I expect from this meter? Is there is a page that has human numbers converted to cat numbers so I know for sure how to read his blood sugar results? Thank you!

Its a plus that you have decided to home test your cat. We can help you with that but you also can go here:

Hello and welcome!

I don't know that meter specifically, but if it a meter designed for human blood, the equivalent normal range for a cat is 50-120 mg/dL (in the US; equivalent to 2.7-6.7 mmol/L in "world" numbers).

What kind of insulin are you using, at what dose? We generally recommend a particular "no-shoot" number at the beginning (usually around 200 mg/dL, but it depends on the insulin used) for safety.

We were at 1u of ProZinc twice a day until he had a small crash after his fourth round and the vet moved us to 0.5u twice a day instead.

It is a unit for humans, and I can’t find any resources on what range the cat should be in on a human meter and what number he has to be higher than in order to need insulin.

I’m unsure what you mean by spreadsheet and signature?

Your signature tell us who you are, the type of insulin (so we can make a quick assertion) and kitties name...Your spread sheet will track just how insulin is working in your cats body. You input the numbers and our fine veterans here help you decipher a course of action. I suggest you click on that forum title i posted and read I thin you will get more definitive answers to this question.

WE WANT to help you but we need your assistance to do so.

Also you may click on some threads and read the bottom of each post . Its in a light gray font all kinds of info about how each persons routine is daily.
oi I hope I've made my self clear.lol

For example, you can see a link to my cat's spreadsheet at the bottom of each post I write. We like to use a common template on FDMB (accessible here: FDMB SPREADSHEET INSTRUCTIONS) and add a shared link in our signatures (you can add or modify your signature by clicking on your username at the top of the page) so that anyone reading a post can quickly get the history before offering any advice.

The initial "no-shoot" number for ProZinc is 200. If you get a pre-shot test number that's less than that, don't shoot, post here for advice.

If your kitty (name?) has already had a "crash", I'd definitely want to err on the cautious side. So glad you are starting to home test!

I’m not seeing any signatures on the posts in here. Is there a setting I have to turn on to do so? I went to that page but all I saw were a lot of posts about changing usernames and other things that aren’t really relevant to me.

Also, I am not trying to be difficult, I just have some questions since we are starting out.

I’m not understanding how to make a spreadsheet either I don’t have a computer so I am using an iPad but some of the directions aren’t making sense. This is all so confusing!

Two prick attempts on the ear and no blood. I don’t know what I am doing wrong?? I watched about six different videos on how to do it and thought I had it down. This couldn’t be more difficult :(

We ALL have been there. Some tricks we use: Get an old clean sock pour some rice into the toe and tie it off. Warm sock in microwave.(warm not too hot.) hold it on kitties ear to get the blood to draw up to it. Then try. You can massage the ear to get things moving. One thing is the ears will learn to bleed. It doesnt take much, after a while it will get easier. some put a dab of neosporin or Vaseline on the spot to the blood will pool on top.
I'm sure there will be more comments. Hang in there! ;)

I used the sock with rice, warmed it up and rubbed his ear with that prior to prick. I used my phones flashlight to find the vein and aimed there using a lancing device (I used it on my finger prior to make sure it works and it definitely did, and then cleaned and disinfected the lancing device after for my cat). I don’t have vaseline but I don’t really have the money to go get some either.

I tried two more times on the other ear and was not able to get it to work either. Maybe his ears just won’t bleed? I can’t use the paw because he’s recovering from some ingrown nails and there is a lot of scabbing on his paws now.

OK you might just want to try taking the lancet out of the device and just free hand it. It was WAY easier for me and a lot of others that way. The ears will "learn" to bleed capillaries will grow to the area. Once this becomes a daily habit it will get easier.

Here (click on dark blue print for link) is a post to help you do your signature block.

Here is a post with several links on hometesting but be sure to check out the first one on Testing and Shooting Tips.

I’m happy to do the spreadsheet for you. Please send me a private message (PM) so I can get some info from you that I need to do it. To send me a PM, click on “Marje and Gracie” to the left and “start a conversation”. I’m happy to do it...it just takes me a couple minutes.

Welcome to the forum!

I tried one more time and was able to do it! His reading is 445 though. Do I need to give him insulin? He didn’t get his insulin this morning at 10am because I was having issues putting together all this equipment.

As you test the ears they will grow more cappilaries and testing will become easier
Aim for the sweet spot , You might want to purchase 28 gauge lancets and do it free hand on a 46 degree angle, eventually more capillaries will grow and it becomes easier
Start to rub his ears to get him used to it, warm them up first, if need be put some rice in a sock and warm it in the microwave and put it on his ears, make sure its not to hot. You don't want to aim for the vein
