A little background for those that don't know what's going on right now, my cat skittles was in remission for a little over a year and now he has a tooth infection and his BG levels have been high ( sometimes, see SS)
I've been thinking for the last few days that it might also have something to do with his Friskies and whether or not the carb count has been changed with the few that I have been feeding him. For over a year I have stayed at 9 carbs and under.
About a week ago I came here and saw that some people are getting higher numbers feeding Friskies (I think ) so I switched him over to fancy feast but I am feeding 2 cats ,him and his brother and the 3 ounce cans just don't work financially for me. So just a few minutes ago I tested him for his PMPS BG and he was 168. I just gave him some Friskies Turkey & giblets .

How long do you think I should wait before I do another BG to see if the food raised his BG to a unsafe level? He did NOT get any insulin today ( posted his numbers below & on SS)

Now another question, his brother ( feisty ) who is not a diabetic I also just tested him just for the heck of it and his BG was 101, isn't that kind a high for non-diabetic ? ( they are litter mates & his brother has always been the overweight one, yet skittles is the one to develop diabetes )

PS
Skittles seems to need a little bit of insulin every other day right now ( .5 unit )

AMPS- 174 ( no insulin )
+7- 143
PMPS- 168

If you test again a half hour after he finished his food, I'd expect you'd be able to see how much his BG is rising. The only caveat to this is that unless you know how much he normally rises after eating the Fancy Feast or another flavour of Friskies, you won't know if that rise is a normal rise or an inflated one without doing more experimenting. One brand/flavour vs. another could cause more or less of a rise in BG because of different ingredients.

50 to 120 would be normal for a cat not on insulin so 101 is OK although it might bear watching if that is a fasting reading.

Thank you, I didn't even think about the fact I should have tested him on FF. shoot! Now I'm not sure what to do. I guess I'm just gonna have to stick with the Friskies and see how he does tomorrow with his BG levels, but then again he has been needing a little bit of insulin like every 48 hours or so . So now I won't know if it's his tooth or the food :nailbiting:

If 50-120 is normal for a Nondiabetic then should I be waiting until skittles hits 200 BG.

Ok,had to see... he actually dropped a tiny from 168 to 138 thirty mins after eating???

EDIT- BG numbers

The 143 and 138 are basically the same reading. Your meter is allowed a 20% variance and there is far less than 20% difference between those numbers. Interesting though that Skittles' BG didn't change much if at all.

Yeah I think it's pretty interesting that his levels didn't change. So maybe the Friskies that I just use is pretty much the same as the fancy feast that I have been using all day today. Which would be great because I only had to use one can to feed both cats where before tonight's dinner I had to use two cans

I put the wrong data is earlier . 30 mins after eating he went from 168 to 138

AMPS-174 ( no insulin)
+7-143
PMPS-168 ( no insulin)
30 mins after his PM BG check, 138 AFTER eating
