Soo.. yep I am back.. we had a breef otj moment then we moved cat got stressed and now I barely can get woden to drop below 200. Plus all the other issues he has had uti/dental issues. Blarg.. I don't know He still throws ketones at me if I look at him wrong. Eats like a pig and steals food his behavior has gotten horrible in terms of food. Stangely he has developed a new habbit he turned into a late night snuggler.

What insulin? It would be very helpful to have some midcycle numbers to see how the insulin is working - even if you have to get them at night.

An UTI/dental issues can certainly raise bg levels. Can you get the dental done? Assume the UTI is being treated, so bg numbers may lower as that is resolved.

Just finished anti's the vet wanted to try that first for the red irritated gums as she is nervus about doing a dental on diabetic kitty unless it is absolutely nesisary. Woden goes into vet for a checkup in 2 days So I'll find out if he still needs dental or if that took care of the problem.

We have been on lantus. and I would love to get more mid range numbers too. But he runs hides and gets where I can't reach him alot of the time. He is one skittish kitty when others come over or if it rains and I have a nurse here 3x a week. So I do the best I can when I can peg him down and poke him.

Dentals on diabetics are absolutely necessary and safe if done properly. My cat Gandalf has a dental every year, he's been diabetic for over 6 years. If vet isn't confident enough to do a dental on Woden, find an AAHA accredited clinic that will be.

Bandit's getting a dental tomorrow. I was not able to regulate his diabetes until after he had his first dental. After his dental his numbers started going down pretty steadily.

She is not afraid to do dentals she will do it if it's really nessisary but he did not have stuff on his teeth just inflamed gums she hoped would be taken care of by the antis so she would not have to put him under in order to do the dental. My cat fights like mad when you mess with his mouth so the only way to do a dental on him is to kock him out. And she just does not want to knock him out for little reason.

I am super happy with my vet she switched us to low carb diet made me home test and everything even before I came to this site. She is very good at what she does and is one of the best cat docters in my area.

btw were second shift here so our shots come at 12am an 12pm respectivly.

Inflamed gums will keep his Blood Glucose high. Like I said, I went through the exact same thing with Bandit. If the gums are red and inflamed then he *needs* a dental before his diabetes will be controlled by the Lantus. The risk of going under anesthesia for the dental is far less than the risks associated with uncontrolled diabetes.

The only proper way to do a dental is to put the cat under anesthesia, always, regardless of whether the cat is calm or not. Anesthesia free dentals are a waste of time because plaque is not removed from under the gum line.

If and only if his mouth isn't painful, you may be able to do some dental home care with brushing and an appropriate pet toothpaste. This may help the gingivitis (gum reddening) clear up too.

If his mouth is painful, don't try it. (Per DVM Lisa Pierson) If it is painful after finishing the antibiotic, I'd go for doing a dental.

He never showed any pain. Just some very slight redness and icky breath. Still showing no pain. And the redness is even less now.

Cats are very good at hiding pain; you'll find out if there is any if you begin doing some home dental care.
You can start as simply as using some damp gauze to gently wipe the teeth and gums (as you'd do for an infant), then move on to a pet toothbrush and paste.
Note: do not use human toothpaste, its not good for cats.

I know.. I brushed his teeth before. Now thre is very little to no rednes in his mouth. he looks just like his brothers teeth now who just got a clean bill of health.

As for pain.
He does not flinch cry out grumble or anything. There is no pain. Heck he does not even squierm much when I play with his mouth. He just kinda sits and takes it then gives me that are you finished now look.
I know how This cat shows pain. Nothing in his mouth is triggering any pain.

BTW happy 8th Birthday to Woden an Loki. There getting soo grown up now.
