I had a fur shot this morning (5.30 am), I tested an hour ago and Taro is very high, at 450, six hours away from his shot. I figured some may have gone in but I guess not. I'm freaking out and can't get a hold of his vet. Should I do his shot now? Should I wait? I'm working 8.30CT to 4amCT today so I'd have to get out of work to come for his other shot, which is not easy, but I don't want him to go high up.

Whenever I've had a fur shot I've waited until his next shot time to give insulin. I know you're worried about Taro after all he''s been through but it isn't safe to give another shot if there's a chance that some went in. At least with the insulin you're using, glargine, there's insulin in the depot that can help to hold him to the next shot time. My understanding is that with glargine it's important to stick to every 12 hours dosing. There's less flexibility in moving dose time than with a non-depot insulin.

Don't beat yourself up. Fur shots happen. You don't know how much went in so giving the shot 6 hours early would still be risky despite the high reading. Moving the shot time will also impact shot times for future days and I presume cause you more timing issues. Normally we don't suggest shooting early by more than 30 minutes. In a pinch and ensuring numbers are high enough for insulin, I've seen folks shoot an hour early but certainly no earlier. Better too high for a day than too low for a minute is the motto around here so if all you are worried about is that high reading mid-cycle, I'd give the next shot at your regular time or a bit early (30 minutes) and just keep to the schedule you know is going to work for you in the coming days.
