Frustration again....HELP!

So I finally can get blood flowing from Tommy's ear and when I try to test it, its either not enough or I get an error message from my Relion Micro meter and can't get a number from it. I attempted it several times this morning and finally got 240 AMPS at 8:45 am and gave him 0.50 insulin and tried testing him again at 9:45 am and same stupid error messages again and I think I hip one of his capillaries and he bleeds like crazy and still an error message. I do not put the strip in until I get blood but I feel like I am playing beat the clock to get the strip in the meter and the blood into the strip and then the error message comes up. UGH!!! HELP!

I would spend some quality time  with the meter. Try it on yourself until you are confident with how long you have to get a sample, how far you can push it in without starting the timer etc.

And remember, you can always put the blood on your fingernail and test it there.

Keep at it- it'll come!

I am reading the instructions on the book and it states 20 seconds. I am going to take your advice and try it on me a few more times. I know what I am doing is for his benefit, but I hate to see him bleed and then nothing! UGH!!! It's frustrating for both of us. But I refuse to give up on this or him!

Thanks for replying. I don't feel so alone knowing someone responds with good advice on this board. I feel so totally clueless and scared that I might do wrong by him.

OMG How I remember going through the same thing. Then a wonderful person here suggested I place the strip only part way into the meter then once I got blood sip it up and push the strip the rest of the way in. I never had any problems after that sage advice.
Good luck you will get the hang of it. Then it will be second nature and next thing you know you will be passing along your information to a newbie. ;)

One thing with the Relion...if you're waiting too long to push in the strip and get the sample before it tells you it's ready, you will get an error. I use a Micro and it has never timed out, even when I don't get enough blood on the first try, but i have gotten an error message if I got the sample before the meter was ready (it beeps and shows a droplet on the screen when ready). I push the strip in, grab the cat, the cotton ball, and the lancet, and do the test as soon as I hear the "ready" beep, never before. If I wait to push the strip in until I get blood, my cat gets squirmy and I either forget and go too early or he moves his ear and it's all over. I rarely get an error for not enough blood if I pull the prick apart and push it together a time or two before grabbing the meter (which is already ready for the blood at that point). It has never timed out on me.

It sounds to me like that's what's happening...make sure you wait for the little drop to show on the screen after you push the strip in before you put any blood on the strip. With this meter, you can't get the blood on the strip before you push it in!

i have the same meter, i just push the strip all the way in before i start poking.. you have a good 5 minutes before it shuts itself off after that. if i cant get blood in 5 minutes i just pull it out and put it back in for another 5 minutes. Ive only ever gotten the error message when the amount of blood was too small.

Exactly what I was doing. I tried testing on my fingers and lo and behold I was testing before I should have and got the same error messages I was getting with Tommy. I then waited til the I saw the last testing figure and the meter code and got my reading. How simple it is when you follow the instruction manual. Do I hear a duh???

Thank you all for responding. Tommy is doing fine, mom not so fine...
