Fructosomine Test? + flat numbers all week...

My vet wants to do one? Is it necessary? Max's bgl have been in the 200s all week, even at amps+6 and pmps +6. I need to post the actual numbers on the ss link, but keep forgetting to bring my meter to work where I have a computer that allows me to use the google docs spreadsheet. He has been pretty flat lined, but for some reason I did get a low 400 number pmps tonight though. I have been shooting .3u but think I should probably move back up to .4u since we aren't getting a nice smiley curve. Thoughts on this?

Numbers since last edit of Max's SS
5/27 amps 253, .3u
Amps+5, 223
Pmps 246, .3u
5/28 amps 277, +.3u
Amps+7, 238
Pmps 286, .3u
5/29 amps 275, .3u
Amps+10, 235
Pmps 262, .3u
5/30 amps 296, .3u
Pmps 410, .4u

No. The fructo test is not necessary for a cat who is already getting insulin and being tested regularly.
The test is just an average of the cat's glucose over the last few weeks, and I think you can get an average from you meter that you are using for home testing.

Before a person starts using insulin, the test is a pretty good thing to see how the cat's been over the last few weeks, but it serves no purpose for you to pay for a test that will give you some number that doesn't match up with your testing numbers.

Now, if the vet wants to do the test for free..... hey, sure! Why not!

I think a dose increase looks okay. As soon as you can, get a curve. It would be good to see when his nadir is and how long the insulin is lasting. On some cycles, he is getting blues later in the cycle - would be good to know what happened in the hours before.

We did one once and it confirmed what we already knew from our own data gathering. Apparently the fruct test shows the average BG for the last month. I agreed to it because I was trying to compromise with my vet about a few things.

I wouldn’t do one again knowing what we know now. I think our test cost about $80. We are in rural PA about an hour from Philly.

If you test preshots, run curves occasionally and test mid cycle here and there, you will know what you need to know. My two cents...

A fruct test is a great idea to verify that a cat has diabetes, but you already know the answer to that question. Beyond that, all the test would do is give you an average BG number over a couple weeks period, and you have that information on your SS and in your meter. I wouldn't bother with the expense, or put Max through the hassle of the vet visit. You might ask your vet what the real value of the test would be, what it can tell him or you that you don't already know?

I don't think my vet really knows much about feline diabetes. Had I followed his advice all along, Max might be dead. He had us at 2u PZI 2x/day. Right now, Max is taking in .4u PZI 2x/day. Scary..... nailbite_smile
