Frontline or Advantage? Dosing advise

I remember reading here a few months ago that you could get the treatment for dog, which is larger than the treatment for cats, and measure it out and get several treatments for cats out of 1 dog treatment. I need more info on this, because I need to get some flea meds. The original post that I saw just had Frontline listed, but is it ok to do that for Advantage also? And how do you know how much to use? I am just kind of nervous about this, and want to make sure it is ok to do? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I'm afraid I can't help with the dosing advice, but I'm sure that someone who has done this will be along to answer your question. I just wanted to say to make sure that you are using Advantage, not Advantix, for this. Advantix, which is the product that does fleas and ticks, is only for dogs and has been known to cause health issues when applied to cats (paralysis, etc.). Advantage, which does fleas, has not been known to cause similar side effects as far as I know. I don't have personal experience with this, but I asked a Bayer (the company that makes Advantage/Advantix) representative at a lunch and learn for the shelter I work at, and that's what she told me about the products. If ticks are a concern in your area, Frontline for cats does fleas and ticks (I personally don't know if using the dog Frontline on a cat would have side effects or not).

And not to insult your intelligence, but this stuff goes ON the cat, not down his throat. When I ran a spay clinic, some idiot took the syringe home and put it in the cat's food. Nearly died. So, after that, we only dispensed it at the clinic. We never dreamed anyone would give it orally, even tho we sent them home with written instructions and a verbal warning.

If I remember correctly, the Frontline Plus formula for dogs is the same as for cats, but in a bigger amount, so you could divide it up to the proper dose, and the Advantage cat/dog formulas are not the same so you can't do it that way. I'm way too nervous to mess with it myself so I buy the boxed cat frontline, but I know there are kits on ebay you can buy that gives you the proper dose amount if you want to do it yourself.

Why not just buy the cat dose? Unless you have a slew of cats to put it on all at once, you'd have to store the extra liquid for another month, and AFAIK no one has tested the efficacy of the liquid once it's out of its air-tight container. If you just have one or two cats, I'd go for the cat dose.
