From High to Low BG #'s--Should I add Medium Carb Food?

Since putting my cat on a low carb diet, her BG #'s have gone way down. I am now getting BG readings in the 60's to 90's OJT. This is a cat that went from vet readings of nearly 500 BG to what it is now thanks to stress-free home testings.

My cat has great BG #'s but still doesn't have a keen appetite. I still have to coax and often force feed her daily.

Would it be safe to give her some medium carb canned food part of the day?

There is no need to give medium carb food. She is in perfect numbers.
Her appetite is lower because she can use what she eats.

Going to a higher carb food is like playing with fire, you risk your kitty falling off the wagon. Her numbers are perfect, look at Dusty's, his are pretty low too. Once regulated or OTJ they don't eat as much so don't worry and don't force any food on her, if she's hungry she'll eat. :cat:

If she's losing weight, then I'd probably take her to the vet to see if something else is going on. If her weight is stable, then maybe she's getting what she needs.

I'm sure it is a big relief! Marshmallow didn't eat much on Sunday so of course I started worrying. I tried checking her BG 4 times on Sunday but I couldn't get blood out of her ear any of those times. I poked her but it didn't bleed enough and she'd cry and struggle and I'd poke her again and then I'd give up for an hour and try again. Finally I decided that she was doing okay with everything else (drinking, litterbox, energy) so I left her alone. Yesterday she ate a lot so I guess she was making up for what she didn't eat on Sunday. I was able to check her BG last night and it was 101 so I guess she just wasn't hungry on Sunday. It's hard not to panic when they do something slightly different!

I know the feeling about it being hard not to panic when things don't go right. You did great observing her behavior and patterns.

Does Marshmallow always give you a struggle? If I am stressed, my cat is. Now she actually waits for me and sits on command (yes, I trained her to sit). She doesn't get a treat afterwards. Just a lot of chin rubs and praises. But it was hard in the beginning when she was so squirmy and didn't want her ears touched. Now she doesn't mind.

I looked up the lancets last night and on Amazon it says they're 28 gauge but they seem smaller than that to me. I may get lancets with a bigger gauge. But last night I microwaved a dry washcloth and put it on her ear and it helped a lot. I hadn't done that before because I'd read about other people putting the washcloth under warm water then in a plastic baggie. Marsh doesn't like the sound of plastic (skittish kitty) so last night I just tried the dry warm washcloth and it worked much better than when I just rub her ear and breathe on it! And yes, I think I was having a harder time on Sunday because I was worried/stressed. Last night when I got home and saw how much she'd eaten, I was calmer. :)

How often are you testing CJ now? I'm still doing it every other day just because I'm OCD. But now that she's officially in remission, I know I can do it less, I'm just afraid... :)

I've had the best success with the 26 gauge. It is slightly thicker but I get the ear to bleed faster.

That's great that the dry warm washcloth works for Marshmallow!

I am testing daily though I've skipped a day here and there when I was too tired or stressed. I don't worry if I skip a day anymore. Now that she's officially in remission and :otj: I could probably test less frequently but since she's still on steroids, I am going to continue testing daily or every other day. Better for us to be OCD and have peace of mind!
