GLP-1 Analoguesare a new way of treating diabetes in humans which will hopefully be able to be used in cats some time in the future. Glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 is a hormone secreted by the gastrointestinal tract after eating which stimulates the secretion of insulin as blood sugar levels rise. These medications reduce the level of glucose in the blood by increasing the amount of insulin. The benefit of this medication is that it only works if blood sugar levels are high. Ohio State University has begun studying the effects of these drugs on cats. Another potential benefit is that administration may only be necessary once a month.
