Hi again, Ruth Ann -
Oops, I asked the question about food before reading your earlier (Mar 10) post. I have a few thoughts, for whatever it's worth:
1) I totally agree with Stacy's comment above: Make certain your vet has ruled out infection &/or problems with teeth. Turned out that Bat had a urinary tract infection when diagnosed at end of Feb. - & her BG #s didn't significantly drop until the antibiotic kicked in. (In 3/10 thread, I notice you'd mentioned Frodo going to the litter box often ...)
2) Sue's comment (on your earlier thread) re: backing off of food with rice in it, is right on the money, too. I've found that even a TINY amount of higher carb canned food - & that's with
zero grain in it- really,
really impacts Bat's BG #s!
3) You have a multi-cat household, so my next question would be: Is Frodo
always prevented from having access to the other (non-diabetic) cats' food?
(I realize this can be difficult to manage ...)
4) Unless Frodo is significantly underweight, you might want to try
not allowing him to free-feed or eat as much as he wants. I only say this because Frodo's #s are high so much of the time. I found that making certain Bat's daily rations (and yes, I measure them) are in line with the amount she should have to maintain her healthy weight works well for her. And I divide that daily ration into two feedings directly after her AMPS/PMPS checks right before her insulin shot. The only times she's been allowed a snack is when she's entered into the hypo-zone. Certainly, every cat is different ... but might be worth a try?
Bat will
always be a chow-hound (has been like a labrador retriever about food since I found her as a baby), and even though she's amply fed at those 2 feedings, she'd eat anything that's not nailed down if I let her. Just saying, you
might try a tighter feeding schedule & see what happens to Frodo's numbers ... (And I know this sounds silly, but I had to stop my "walk-about-while-snacking-on-potato-chips" husband from doing that around the cat. Bat was eating potato chip bits off the floor - why hubby can't find his mouth, I do not know - & chips are a real glucose-raiser.)
5) My only other thought is: Maybe your vial of insulin is not so good. Happens sometimes.
Sorry for the long post.

I hope this is somewhat useful to you, though. Will be hoping for better #s soon for your Frodo! - Robin
