Hi, has anyone used mason jars for freezing freshly made raw food? Do you use the lids that come for canning or plastic storage covers? I do not want to use any plastic containers either for freezing raw cat food or any eggs, meat, cheese, etc., for human consumption. Suggestions will be much appreciated. I have purchased 2-cup mason jars. Would appreciate your input before also purchasing 1-cup jars. Glass seems safer than plastic. My neighbor's surgery did not go well. I might be inheriting her feline triplets!

No glass jars. They will not expand around the freezing food and will break!!!! Better to wrap in wax paper, then wrap in foil for freezing.

Hi, BJ!
Thank you for the cautionary note. These are freezer-safe jars - must allow 1/2 inch for food expansion. Being extra cautious, I allow about 2 inches! They're by BALL. They're reasonably priced. I even like using them for flower vases, pasta, rice, dry beans storage. Typical pantry items storage.

I was unaware that they'd come up with a design for that. Is it slightly narrower at the bottom than an the top?

Mason jars have been "freezable" for quite some time as long as they don't have a smaller opening at the top and they're not filled too high. They have a "freeze line" on them that shows you how much you can put into them and safely freeze.

Here's some pictures of "The Freeze Line"

I haven't ever done any canning and have always used plastic containers or the plastic wrap and foil method for freezing things.

I freeze my raw food mixture in ball canning jars using the metal lids that came with them. I move one jar from freezer to fridge at least 12 to 24 hours before feeding so that it has some time to thaw. I have never had one break.

I freeze mine in plastic ice cube trays that I use only for that purpose. I cover the trays with plastic wrap, and after they are frozen I dunk them in hot water and release from the trays. I then put them in zipper bags and just grab a few out every day and thaw in the fridge.
