? Freezing cat food in ice trays

I was just woken up from a much needed snooze to a crash.
I had left a plastic ice tray with two cans of frozen Fancy Feast mixed with water on top of my coffee maker to thaw. I went into the kitchen and Jackson was on the floor in front of the counter washing his face. He had found the food and tipped over the ice tray of food and helped himself.
The food seems to freeze so solid, I can't get it out with a spoon or knife, so I try to thaw it, and still it doesn't just pop out of the tray like an ice cube would. Should I try spraying the tray with Pam or something first?

I didn't spray the tray. If the tray is plastic, I found just twisting it helped pop out the food cube. Or dip the bottom of the tray briefly in warm water.

A few hard taps on the counter and warming the bottom of the tray should work.

Food pops out easier with a silicone ice cube tray.

I had the tray out to thaw for a bit in the sink last night, and fell asleep. The tray was empty this morning. He ate the whole two cans of Fancy Feast for a mid-night snack.
