Ruby wants nothing to do with any of the fish flavored food varieties, freeze dried shrimp, salmon or tuna treats. But Thrill's freeze dried ocean whitefish treats are a whole different story. She'd eat them all day, if given the opportunity.

Do I need to worry about her eating the fish treats regularly (not from a calorie standpoint, more from a health standpoint)?
She'll eat the freeze dried chicken, turkey and liver but she LOOOOVES the whitefish.

Thanks
Amy

The concern is with the potential for toxic mercury exposure; the larger the fish, the older, the more that could have been ingested and stored in body tissues.
Additionally, some bottom feeding fish (ex catfish) are prone to collecting PCBs.

Does anyone have any idea what type of fish is in "Ocean Whitefish"? I mean, is there a fish called a Whitefish, or is it just lots of different kinds of fish that happen to have whiter meat? Is it like fish they catch on shrimpboats that usually end up being reclassified as "bait" at the fish market, or is it the leftovers from cleaning the fish they put into the packages of fillets you might find at the grocery store?

Good question Carl, my girls love the white fish treat but I have also found lamb, and now duck all freeze dried so I rotate so they do not always get the fish kind. I tried the venison, that was just ok, not the best
Now, I have a question, how about the freeze dried cheeze? I bought some but have not had the time to post about it. They will take it back if I cannot feed it to them. Again, just trying to offer something else besides fish...

There is actually a species of Ocean Whitefish...if you are curious what they look like I found this link http://www.mexfish.com/fish/ocwht/ocwht.htm, now if this is actually what is used in the making of Ocean Whitefish cat food is anyone's guess as whitefish can also denote fish with white flesh such as perch or cod.

The tube is totally vague and just says "100% real White Fish Treats".

I think its weird that Ruby will turn away from tuna, shrimp or salmon but will dive head first into this stuff.

Thanks Mel!
I did look on the Friskees label, and the 1st ingredient does say "Ocean Whitefish" rather than "fish by products" so chances are it really is that specific fish.

Looks like they can be big or little according to that link:
The Ocean Whitefish is found at depths of up to 450 feet in the water column over both rock and sand bottoms. It is found in all Mexican fishing waters including around the oceanic islands. The Ocean Whitefish is reported to reach just over three feet in length; however 18-inch models are much more common. They are viewed by locals as good table fare.
