My sugar cat gets a can of FF morning and night when I do his AMPS/PMPS. But I also have young again zero carb sitting out all the time for free feeding which he occasionaly snacks on. How will that affect his sugars when I'm testing him which will affect his dosage?

Thanks,
Lisa

Hi there,

I have read that free feeding is common here. 1 caveat is no food for at least 2 hours prior to the PS.

All the other times get leveled out with the digestion of the main meal at injection and the insulin effect and becomes a normal part of your kitties curve.

I did my own experiment. I saw him eating the dry food and since I was doing a curve today anyway just threw in some extra testing. After he ate, I tested him every 30" for two hours. His glucose only changed by 3 so at least there wasn't a significant spike.

Our vet said not to worry about free feeding. She does encourage us to test before shots, but isn't concerned about whether it's a fasting number.

A food spike from eating may be detectable about 2 hours after eating. It will depend on the amount and frequency of consumption. Some cats do better grazing. Some will scarf and do better with mini-meals, by freezing some to be eaten when thawed or using a timed feeder such as the Pet Safe 5 (several folks her recommend this feeder).
