I am 75 and have a hard time injecting my cat by myself. My son helps me for now. Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can inject my cat Alley by myself. Alley doesn't act nice like the other cats I've seen on this site.
She tries to get away and doesn't want anypart of a shot, even when she is eating she will take off! Any good idea's out there? I've skipped a couple of shots and also about three fur shots and that is with a helper.
Thanks for any advice you can give me. I am not sure how to use this site to send a message or ask a question. Thanks Janet & Alley

I hope you see this Janet! I'm sure lots of people will have ideas for you.

my cat tries to get out of the shots too, but he loves his food. i've found that if i have the syringe loaded (i hold it in my mouth) and ready to go the second i set down his food, i can get it in. I put his food down next to the wall, about a foot away from my hutch - in other words, so his behind is in a corner while he is eating.

i get down on the floor so i am now boxing him in. so one side has a wall, his tail is against the hutch, one side has my body, and in front of his face is the food that he is desperate to suck down!

then i lift up his scruff and slide in the needle, give him a half-second to start eating again and then inject the insulin.

if i do all of that within the first 30 seconds of him starting to eat, he doesn't hardly react.

i know this sounds idiotic, and i look it, but i got one of those miner's headlamps so i can see - it makes all the difference in the world. my overhead light isn't enough and he has long fluffy hair. once i got it i discovered that several of my friends had one for camping, so if i'd asked i could've borrowed one. i bought mine from REI - anywhere that sells sporting goods would have them. if you get one, you want it to be bright enough!

Gabby is pretty easy. I shoot when she's eating. She's got her head in the bowl and I shoot.

I do the same as Sienne & Julie. Jasmine is so excited for her feeding time so I have the needle ready before I put down her food. I then put her food down, rub her back a few seconds and then I shoot. Jasmine has never had a problem taking her needles. I then tell her she is a "good girl" and kiss her head. She likes to hear "good girl" and starts purrrrrrr'ing Good luck, they get used to it

Maybe if the cat was fed on a higher surface like a counter or table, it would help. Then there would be no bending over involved. Giving the shot from a more comfortable position may not only make it easier to do, but being closer to you, you'd be better able to see what you were doing. Good luck, the kitties can make it difficult sometimes.

Janet, I'm in the camp of people who put the cat on a level that's comfortable for ME.

We started out trying to hold Kitty in our laps, thinking he would be more comfortable. But he squirmed, and the angle was bad.

So we put him on a table. We've also heard vets say that when the kitty is on your level, he senses that you are in charge, and he is more likely to cooperate. (This would make many people here laugh hysterically.)

We ALWAYS give a treat (for us, freeze-dried chicken). We gave the treat after the shot, but maybe you could give a treat at the beginning of the process, to get Alley's cooperation.

It's important for YOU to be calm. If you're anxious, he will definitely know that. He'll feel anxious too, and maybe try to run. Even if you feel tense about the shot, distract yourself. sometimes I used to sing to Kitty! It convinced BOTH of us that we're not afraid!

So you might consider a few test runs - put him on the table. Give him a treat. Pet him. Do something he likes. (We soothe Kitty with a warm sock. He likes anything warm.) See if you can convince him that the table is a nice place. Once he's relaxed, he may accept the shot.

Good luck!

Like many others we give Tess her shot while she is eating. For me the easiest is on the couch and I just put a mat down under the food.

You might also consider having a patch of fur shaved so you can see to give the shot more easily. I think as you become more confident in your ability to not hurt her, she will relax and cooperate. They can sense our nervousness.

Does she like anything else a lot? Tess just adores being brushed. If something like that would calm her then giving the shot while she is relaxed would be easier.
