I have a 15 year old cat who was diagnosed in Dec2010 with diabeties. I have been giving him insilin starting out at 1/2 now up too 4 units. I have switched to a dry low carb natural food. It is one that all my 6 other cats can eat too. My questions are. I have seen no change in reading. ( I home test) for months now all i get is (HI) on the meter. He take the shots fine still plays (very little)( but he is 15). He was 17 pounds untill Dec then he went to about 5 or 6. thats why i ttok him in. I dont know what to do and my vet has told me I have to just wait and put him down when he gets real bad. But I still think there is more that can be done. Am I right? Thank you for any help that i can get.

You might try switching to a low carb canned food; at least 1 person's cat dropped 100 points after switching.

Pop over to Binky's Page to see some of the options.

I have 11 cats and feed WalMart Special Kitty Turkey and Giblets dinner, which is roughly 5% calories from carbohydrates. Is it the very best food? Maybe not, but with 11 mouths to feed, it was a workable compromise. I'll note that 2 overweight civilians (Precious and Farrall) have each lost over 2 pounds since switching everyone back in September.

Additionally, there is a test for acromegaly and one for insulin antibodies available which can determine if the pancreas is actually functioning, but the body is immune or resistant to its effects.
