Hi all,
We're baaaaack!
Well, it's been two sweet yrs OTJ, and Savannah has her diabetes back along with a another serious ailment. The vet think she may have renal failure as well, so now we are feeling stuck about what to feed her. Any suggestions for a cat with diabetes & renal failure???
Thanks!!

My cat is also diabetic (In remission since April) and has renal failure. I have been feeding him Weruva - Paw Lickin Chicken and occasionally Weruva - On the Cat Wok (I haven't been able to find it in any stores lately). They are both low carb and low phosphorous. He seemed to get sick of eating those all day every day though so a week ago I bought him Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets. I have been feeding him a can of Weruva in the morning and Friskies at night and he seems to be doing well. In just the past week he feels like he may have gained some weight (much needed) and his fur is looking a lot better then it was before. He has had very stringy dull looking fur and he feels much softer and his fur is looking better. He has also been waking me up every morning climbing on me and rubbing his head against me which he hasn't done much in the past while :).
His BG levels have been good on the Friskies and from what I have read it is also low phosphorous. Hopefully that's true! He is still drinking quite a bit and peeing a lot but he seems better overall this past week.

Izzy is in the later stages of renal failure. She has had CKD for 4 years now I think? I do some crazy things but here goes what I Have been doing.

Originally I fed FF Classics without any binders. We did this up until this last few months. Her numbers are getting high :( LIke I said..late stage now.

I rotate in various foods. Still use the FF Classics and now add in the Friskies Special Diet. With those I add Aluminum Hydroxide Powdered for help bind the Phosphorus.

To make sure she eats her Zobaline, Miralax, Jarrows B and her evening high blood pressure pill...I make up the a concoction (using a baby spoon as a measure)....

2 dollups of babyfood squash, 2 heaping dollups of baby food, 1/8 tsp of Miralax, dash spoon of sprirulina, dash spoon of Jarrow B, .75 pill of zobaline, 1/3 of capfull of Gentle Digest probiotic. 1/2 dash of taurine powder and a dash spoon of Lysine. 2 dash spoons of aluminum hydroxide) Evenings only I add that BP pill.

I put this in a syringe and warm it up in a bowl of water. She eats this first (I insist she must eat at leat 1/2 of it) before I give her the regular FF or Friskies. If she only eats 1/2 syring I put the rest in her food and mix it in.

Whew...Now for her FF or Friskies...I add another 1/8 tsp of Miralax (ok but she had constipation issues) and 1/8 tsp aluminum hydroxide, quite a bit of water and I have started sprinkling a little FortiFlora.

Plus I now give 100ml sub q fluids daily....along with her insulin shots.

Just call me crazy :) If you are interested in her renal numbers...its page 2 of her FDMB SS.

Thanks all for the info! I was feeling very confused about that...not she's not eating much and will eat dry food. Oy.

I posted more info in a different thread :( on Lantus and the main message board.
