Food Transisition - Need Advice

So, I switched Beatrice over to wet food Friday and she immediately ate it and loved it. She also ate it on Saturday. I have already seen an improvement in her water intake and urinating, and her normal behavior seems to be returning. Unfortunately on Sunday and this morning, she has decided NOT to eat wet food. What the heck? If she accepted it so quickly and eagerly on Friday, why has she now changed her mind? Is this normal?
Of course her little sister, will have no part of the wet food. Have they been conspiring behind my back? :lol:

Also, is it okay to sprinkle cat nip over wet food to entice them to eat it? Just wondering if that is okay, and if anyone has been successful with it.

I tried catnip. Didn't work. ohmygod_smile
Apparently dried oregano helps with some cats. Otherwise a sprinkle of parmesan on top or some water flavoured with tuna flakes?
 
Try some different flavours and brands. I went through that with my boys too, they would happily eat a can or two and then wouldnt want it any more until we hit a flavour/brand they liked enough. Now they only get two flavours of fancy feast. Not a lot of variety but I dont care as long as they eat. and they dont seem to care. Twice a week I give them a fish one as a treat.
 
My cats are just the same - 1 day they like it and the next turn their noses up.
I can't get them to eat the same flavour more than 2 days in a row - I have to swap in something else.

They all love fish flavours - which, of course, should not be given regularly, but I do sprinke/mix in the fish with other food if I need them to eat.
Or freeze dried chicken "sprinkles" - never fails!
 
I rotate the different flavors sometimes deliberately leaving one out of rotation for a week then reintroducing it and she thinks she's getting a REAL treat. A tiny sprinkle of Fortiflora usually gets her eating too.

Thank you all for the quick replies. I will keep working hard it. At least I know I'm not alone in this frustrating situation. I left home this morning in tears, thinking OMG what am I going to do!? Unfortunately for me, I have a boyfriend that is not supportive in this situation. He thinks I'm making the situation worse by not feeding Beatrice what she wants, and thinks I'm crazy!

Okay...that is a whole separate issue of mine :twisted:

Hello Dee,

Can I ask you a couple of questions? (Sorry if I missed this... Duh!)

Is your cat on insulin?

If she is on insulin then it would be advisable to only switch her to wet food if you are testing her blood glucose at home.
Dry food raises the blood glucose. Therefore removing dry food lowers the blood glucose; and an insulin dose that may be just fine when the cat is on dry food may be too much when the dry food is removed (and the insulin dose may need to be reduced).

Are you testing your cat's blood glucose at home?

Thanks for the reply. No she is not on insulin yet. I'm trying the wet food first because she is boarderline 155. Of course, this is not the course of action the vet wanted to take. And to top all of this off, Beatrice has not got a terrible upper respiratory infection that apparently she got at the vet that I took her too last week, because she doesn't go outside, and around no other cats. Now she is even sicker and won't eat anything :cry:

I am taking her to a new vet this morning and taking her records. Beatrice and me both are very upset and stressed. I feel so helpless and have major anxiety!

I will be performing home testing once I get her well again and eating something. It will be interesting to see what this new vet says today.

The perfect time to switch her to wet food, then, if she's not yet having insulin. Although, if she's sick, she may not want to eat much, especially if it has smell/taste/texture that is new to her.

Poor Beatrice. :cry: Poor you. :cry:

I hope the new vet is more understanding. Good luck with them.
