Ok, now I'm confused! We've been on Vetsulin and following the "test, feed, shoot" protocol. Now he's on Lantus, and our schedule got delayed last night. Instead of 8pm shot...9:30pm. Will work to bring that back to 8 over the next couple of days. In the meantime...can we feed at 6:30pm since he's howling for food, or do we wait till his shot around 9pm? I've been told with Lantus, it can be given without food. We went ahead and fed him just now, at 6:30. Giving shot at 9pm. If I need to give him a little more food with shot, please let me know. THANKS!!

With Lantus you want to have at least 2 hours after feeding before testing, since food can influence the glucose levels. After at least 2 hours from eating you can do your test and feed and shoot. Since Lantus takes a few hours before it starts "working" in the system having a full meal on board is not necessary. Many people will feed 1/2 the morning meal at shot time and then the other 1/2 at +2 or +3 when the Lantus should be starting to hit the system. The main reason people will feed at the same time as doing the shot is just to make sure their kitty is willing to eat.

It's only important that he not get food for the 2 hours prior to the Pre-shot tests, so there's no reason he can't be fed at 6:30 if shot time isn't until 9...just take food up the 2 hours before shot time

With Lantus, you're right that it's not as important that they eat a full meal before you shoot since the "onset of action" isn't usually for 2-3 hours after the shot....we just want to make sure that they're not sick or something and won't eat at all!!

Usually we test/feed/shoot all within about 5-10 minutes....Test to make sure they're high enough for insulin at all, Feed to make sure they at least eating "fairly" normally and Shoot
