If you've been visiting condos or reading subject lines, you've not doubt noticed how many kitties seem to be having all sorts of tummy and GI problems (i.e., the polite way of noting lots of barfing and poo problems). I'm wondering what those of you whose kitties are having these sorts of problems are feeding your cats. Could this be an issue with the food or is it just coincidence?

Guinness has thrown up a few times over the last couple of day and I attribute it to two things. Too much cat grass and Beef Liver treats. He tends to eat the beef treats whole so they just sit in his stomach and roll around until they decide to come back up. He's been eating Merrick Cowboy cookout for over two years and chicken treats, the liver treats are usually given for variety, but he and his brother always yak them up (not much of a treat at that point, huh?). I also rotate a variety of Merrick Before Grains flavors to supplement his evening meal (more food at night, means more sleep for me). He did just have a dental, with some teeth removal, but we went back two weeks after the dental and the vet gave him a clean bill of health (aside the the diabetes, enlarged heart, small kidneys, crazy mystery illness) in his mouth.

My two had a Dental a week ago Friday and have been having eating issues. Shadow vomited once each day but I think it was due to an irritation in his throat from the intubation. He had problems from Friday night. Raja had been fine up until Wed when she began to walk away from her food. No vomiting for Raja, just inappetence. They both got shots of famitodine and cerenia...to settle their stomachs and to help with the nausea. We had two doses each of Bupe too and now they have been eating well again over the past 24-36 hours.

We have been eating Fancy Feast exclusively since the recall of the Wellness. Preciously, they had the Wellness chicken mixed in with the FF but we are using the FF only nowadays. Their favorite seems to be the FF chopped grill feast classic, followed by turkey & giblets feast. We always use freeze dried Prue Bites chicken on top.....

J.D. had a low night and I kept feeding him all night, with some HC which he is not used to, and he also ate about 7 shrimp that night. But normally, he can eat 5 shrimp just fine :-D The next day I came home from work and the Friskies in the feeder looked kind of pushed around but not really eaten and J.D. had a horrible tummy ache. My cats didn't eat the Friskies from the feeder for 2 days after that.

I posted on this on the health board a few days ago. I know there was a lot of stuff in the human news about drug resistant salmonella but if the wet food is cooked I was told it shouldn't be a problem. Maybe we should ask what others are feeding just to get a trend - just in case.

You might not be far off the mark on this Sienne. Most pet food companies have a common source for supplies. It could, therefore, be in different brands and varieties. Happened with horse grain a few years ago. Luckily, what I feed was not involved.

punkin eats fancy feast, but i feel pretty confident his intestinal 911 was a reaction to the antibiotic. he was on clavamox for a post-dental 3/29 infection. he's had a cerenia injection, followed by pills for the upcoming 4 days and a change in antibiotic.

our civvie, anya, is eating the same food and is fine.

Pretty sure Willie's issues last night were due to munching on a plant he shouldn't have in the flower boxes out back. He's been eating the BG and Wilderness poultry varieties, with some Grammy's Pot Pie when he needs carbs.

Great post idea! Unfortunately, with pet foods, we have to always be vigilant...

I was wondering about some additive being tainted. A single ingredient could be added to more than one brand of food, as we saw with the tainted wheat gluten issues. Also, one manufacturer can produce many different brands of food.

Before Emily became ill, she was eating Fancy Feast Chicken Feast, Turkey and Giblets Feast, and Tender Liver & Chicken Feast. She ate some Friskies Chef's Dinner, and also k/d prescription renal kibble. The Canadian Fancy Feast is imported (origin unknown, but I think they are from the US), and has different naming and labelling from the US product. For instance, our labels have to be in English and in French, and have metric weights on them. We can't buy Fancy Feast beef foods, as it is illegal to import beef from the US. There are a lot of Fancy Feast varieties and other pet foods not available in Canada.

After Emily became ill, I introduced a lot of other foods into the household to entice her to eat. Note that I have two other cats who eat the same food as Emily, and they are not sick, so I suspect that Emily's illness is due to the issues identified in her ultrasound (although inflammatory bowel disease probably is probably strongly influenced by diet).

I went out to my local holistic pet food store yesterday to buy Bear Man's secret weapon - Evo kibble. There is only one store who is licensed to sell the Evo product line (canned and dry) in my area. I noticed that the packaging has changed. The owner said that his store is selling off their inventory, and will no longer be carrying the Innova line. They have been purchased by Procter and Gamble, and the store owner has a concern about ingredients and quality control. I didn't buy the Evo

Noxin's bean also mentioned feeding FF Liver & Chicken and Noxin having liquipoo. I know some kitties have problems with liver treats the way Linda noted. Does anyone that feeds the FF Liver & Chicken know if this is beef or chicken liver in the food?

Also, keep in find that if you have a kitty with any chronic illness which may be taxing immune function or even a cat that has an infection which is doing the same thing, the cat may be more susceptible to something funky that's going on with food. The other cats in the household may be fine if they are in good health overall.

Good mornin all. Tasha has been eating FF classics exculsively for a few weeks now, and the only ones she has had upchucking with is the chicken varieties. I took those away, and she hasn't had any probs except with the occasional hairball.

I wonder if there is something in the FF that is making so many kitties have ucky tummies

Tipper eats FF elegant medleys shredded turkey fare and salmon. Tried FF chicken classic twice and both times she vomited. She may have other issues looming but I stay away from the chicken. I would rather have a higher carb count than vomit. She seems to enjoy the pro plan LC varieties with no issues

I am feeding fancy feast liver and chicken feast. And they had a tiny bit of fancy feast chicken feast after it started.

If anyone is interested here's a link I found a while ago http://itchmoforums.com/pet-food-questi ... 340.0.html regarding reading the coding on the bottom of the Fancy Feast cans :

" Here is the e-mail reply I received from Purina today regarding the coding on their cans. Note that they have forwarded the * * question to someone else to answer, so I will post that reply when I receive it. This will at least give those who use Fancy Feast a full explanation of what the numbers on their cans mean.

"Thank you for contacting Nestlé Purina PetCare Company.

We appreciate your interest in our products. There are manufacturer's dates on all of our products. They usually are located by the "best by" date, and are usually stamped in ink, or embossed on the package. This code is a series of numbers and letters, and may look something like this ex: 62351178L230187.

Here is how to read the code on your package. Ex: 62351178

The First number is the year it was manufactured (2006)
The next 3 numbers are the Julian date it was manufactured (235th day)
The next 4 numbers are the plant where it was manufactured.
The L2 is a line number at the plant
The last numbers indicate a time stamp when the food was manufactured.
