Hello everyone. I wanted to request some recommendations on new food for Taro. He has gained weight and is currently at 10lbs. He was eating dry w/d Hills food, however, we ran out of that food a week ago and the vet needs to order it because I haven't been able to buy it anywhere else, so in the meantime he was eating the wet w/d food. Vet told me to keep his 5 units but he was getting ver very low numbers so I dropped it to 3.5 instead and he's getting great numbers. He was supposed to be eating two cans a day, but he doesn't quite like it and I was hardly getting him to eat a can. I started mixing it up with Fancy Feasts pate and he is eating quite well since that day. My vet's recommendation is to keep him eating w/d, but what would you recommend? What amount of food should he be eating if kept only on Fancy Feasts? Also, any dry food brands that are good for diabetics without being prescription foods? We have a check up this weekend and would like to consult all of this recommendations with the vet. Thanks!

If Taro likes the w/d better mixed with Fancy Feast pates then I say go for it. Fancy Feast pate on its own is fine for diabetic cats in spite of what your vet recommends. If Taro is happy to eat wet food and hasn't had any dry for a week you might consider leaving him on wet food only. It's possible the low BGs you got were from not having dry food and it was smart of you to go ahead and reduce the dose when that happened.

If you decide to give him Fancy Feast only you could start with 2 cans per day maybe split into 3 or 4 meals. If you can weigh him at home to track how he does on that amount, you'll have data to know whether he needs more food. Is 10 lb a good weight for him?

Keep a very close eye on BG levels and dose; w/d is very, very high in carbs (and probably a lot to do with why Taro's insulin dose was at 5IU BID - good call on lowering the dose because Fancy Feast classic patés are much lower in carbs!).
