Hi everyone! Today a friend of mine asked me about a cheaper diet for her roommate's cat who is currently on Hills c/d. I don't have any personal experience with UTIs so I was wondering if you all could help me out with finding her a new food choice!

What I know: Marley is 9 years old, originally on dry food. About two years ago, Marm was pretty obese and had just had her leg amputated due to cancer, so they switched her to Blue Buffalo in an attempt to help her lose weight. She was on it about two months and then was unable to pee, and when she did it had blood in it. They had to get a pee sample from her by peeing on some special pellets but Marm was so stubborn about it she held it about 12 hours before giving in.

My friend says she doesn't think she had to be hospitalized for it, but the vet did put her on the Hills c/d permanently.

I have read over Dr. Pierson's article on UTIs and while she mentions Hills c/d (and that she doesn't recommend it) there's no brand suggestion for what they should be on. I remember reading that Friskies Special Diet was the food of choice for UTI kitties originally but that it was discontinued a few years ago, and I'm not sure what the new favorite it.

I looked around a little bit and found this site: https://www.allthebestpetcare.com/pet-nutrition/urinary-problems-in-cats/
I'm sure there are many other informational sites out there. Would your friend consider trying a raw diet? That might fit the requirements of "flesh" foods, with lower ash, magnesium and phosphorus, and help Marley to better health.
If you have visited Dr. Pierson's website www.catinfo.org, you can read that she feeds her cats a raw meat diet, with proper nutritional supplementation. Might be a problem solver for little Marley.
Your friend can do further research on the FoodFurLife site: https://www.foodfurlife.com/#/
I use this product for Idjit. It's a bag of supplements that you add to raw meat, with water, and don't have to worry about getting everything you need in the right proportions.

Thank you for the site, Lou! I will check it out now and pass it along to her.
I'm not sure if my friends' current living situation will be ideal for a raw diet but I will mention it to her and let her decide. :)

The research I've done today leads me to wonder if Wellness, Weruva, or Soulistic are good choices for UTI kitties. If anyone has experience with those please let me know!

Google FLUTD and see if the symptoms are the same.
Any wet food would be better than dry and putting a bit of extra water in the food would help too.
