Just because I'm curious: why do cats have to eat when giving insulin? What will happen if insulin is given on an empty stomach?

I think you use ProZinc? With the harsher insulin (like Caninsulin and Humulin) we might be concerned that the harsh drop on an empty stomach could cause the numbers to go lower than we want, in a hurry. With the milder insulins, a kitty who vomits up his meal can also have lower numbers than usual because of the empty stomach and may need to be monitored more closely during that cycle.

Just safer to have a meal on board. Is that proving difficult for your schedule? Can we help?

If you listen to the insulin commercials on TV, they recommend that people who use insulin take their insulin within 15 minutes of eating. It's too ensure that they're blood sugar doesn't drop too low, by giving insulin without food.

It's the same for animals.

The basic science is that insulin will cause the BG to drop, and food will make it rise. The trick is making them work together while they work against each other.

In theory (theory because I don't think any of us shoots without feeding, at least not on purpose), you would expect to see a drop in BG more quickly if there's no food on board. And a greater drop as long as no food is given, then a rise once it is given.

It will just make your cycles different, and not as predictable, because the timing of the insulin action won't be "typical".

I think you are using Lantus, right? Might be a good question to post in the TR forum. Maybe ask if anyone has experience with shooting and not feeding right then, so you can look at their spreadsheets to see what their curves look like?

How are you doing Hosanna?
