Bud was diagnosed 9/13 and the vet is giving him a month with diet change before starting insulin. I am feeding Friskies Pates, but Bud needs to gain weight. Is there a food that's more recommended for weight gain? Or perhaps a treat supplement I can add?

More frequent smaller meals may help as he won't get too full at any one time and may eat more that way.

For cats, there are 3.5 calories per gram for protein and carbohydrate and 8.5 calories per gram for fat. Any low carb food with high calories is likely to work. See the Cat Info food chart to help select some to try, such as wellness Turkey and Giblet, Evo Cat and Kitten, and so on.

Has Bud had his B12 and folate levels checked? B12 supplementation could help with building him up again.

I feed my cat wellness grain free can food , its a higher quality food and keeps him full longer , hope this helps

Thanks for the replies! I'll be heading to Petsmart this weekend for some Wellness food. Since switching to a low carb diet, I've noticed less water intake so that's a good sign right? I know it hasn't been a full week yet, I'm just wondering when I'll start to notice a weight gain? Does it take a while?

At the time I took Bud to the vet, although devastated with the diagnosis was diabetes, I was happy to hear all the other test results came back fine. But I'm not sure if they did a folate or B12 test. I know I payed for a complete blood panel work up. I'll have to call and ask.
