Hi I am new here,

Checkers my 11yr old boy had stuvites years ago and I have been feeding him prescription urinary care diet. Royal Canin SO, Hills c/d and Purina Pro Plan UR (he likes variety). I only feed him the wet food and give some of the dry food as a treat (maybe a tablespoon max a day). Two weeks ago he stopped eating so took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with pancreatitis and further testing showed Diabetes.

He was treated for the pancreatitis and I started giving him insulin Prozinc and told to switch to a diabetic diet, concerned about the previous bout of stuvites the vet reassured me the prescription diabetic food is safe for FLUTD. Unfortunately, Checkers hates it.

I tried mixing it with Fancy Feast Classic (Pate here in Canada), which he loves, but he leaves the prescription diabetic food untouched. I don't want a resurgence of the FLUTD. Is the Fancy Feast safe for that? The urinary care food is too high in carbs for a diabetic so i can't continue with that. I found the wonderful food chart but I don't know what I need to look for in a diet.

Does anyone have experience with a cat who is diabetic and has had stuvites, any advice?

Apologies, if this has been discussed elsewhere in the forum, I am new and a little overwhelmed.

Thanks,
Chris

Just to add, he is a slim cat and has never been overweight.
I was also wondering; some of the low carb foods ar high in fat rather than high protein. Are those okay for a diabetic cat or is it better to be low carb, high protein?

Waving from central Ontario.

Yes, most cats find the prescription diabetic food not to their liking.

I'm tagging @Wendy&Neko (another Canadian) who knows a lot about diets for diabetic cats.

One week after Neko got her diabetes diagnosis, her buddy joined the fun and got a idiopathic cystitis diagnosis. His vet put him on C/D. Neko like to steal his food - it totally wan't working. I had to police the meals. So I asked his vet for a solution that would work for both conditions, and she suggested raw food, which they both liked. Later on I read the section on the Catinfo website section on Urinary Tract Diseases, and discovered the solution was low carb wet or raw food (go figure!) ideally with lower phosphorus and plenty of water added. That means Fancy Feast is not ideal as it's rather higher in phosphorus. However, there are a lot of other lower carb options (such as Weruva and Tiki Cat and some of the Merrick) that also have lower phosphorus that would work. I ended up giving raw food with egg shell calcium.

Hi thank you. That is very helpful. I notice that they have Tiki Cat and Weruva at a nearby Tisol. Though based on the cat food chart the phosphorus varies, what would you consider low?

Does it matter what type of raw food?

I will check out the link on Urinary tract disease to, thanks.

Chris

Most of the Fancy Feast are over 300 mg phosphorus per 100 kcals. Ideally 250 or lower would be better. You can sometimes get the breakdowns from raw food manufacturers. Basically look for ones without ground bones in them. I also fed home made raw, made with either the TC Feline Special formula premix or the EZComplete from FoodFurLife. I forgot to mention that I also had some Feliway diffusers in the house.

Feliway diffusers can calm anxious cats. It sends our pheremones that calm cats. Many of the cats with cystitis are skitty kitties. Stress can make it worse. Mine was a semi feral that had been at the shelter a long time, and was relatively new in my house.

It you opt for a raw diet, the pre-mixes (FoodFurLife and TC Complete) are very helpful so you don't have to source all of the supplements to add. You add water to the pre-mix and then combine it with the raw food. Just one FYI, the EZComplete (from FoodFurLife) is back ordered.
