I am using Dr. Pierson's food chart, and I see that BFF and Weruva are very low carb (both as a % of calories and on a dry matter analysis basis).

Can anyone speak to their experience with this food? Henry is having what MAY be a food allergy, and I would like to try him (and my other household cats) on the BFF and/or Weruva foods. Henry is a diet controlled diabetic, mostly in green numbers (with the exception of yesterday, when he had a reaction to the Clavamox prescribed for the skin allergy and had about the worst reaction to it I've ever seen - vomiting blood. His BG was 325 in the middle of all that. And don't worry - we've already been to the ER and Henry is much better today). His spreadsheet is UTD.

BFF is fish only, so I try to stay away from that. Weruva is a bit more expensive and is lower in calories than other options available out there (requiring more of it to satiate them), so I don't buy it too often. I prefer the Tiki Cat Chicken varieties to the Weruva because it's comparable in price, yet has better quality ingredients, lower carb content, and higher protein.

Mikey also has a food allergy (all red meats, so far), so I try to stay as pure as possible (no gluten, corn, wheat, rice, etc...) just in case he's also allergic to something else.

Hm. I can only find a few varieties of TIki with carb listings on Dr. Pierson's list. Is that accurate? 5 varieties, only one is fish and chicken, the other all fish?

Also - any experience with Ziwipeak?

Tiki Cat only has two Chicken options: the Koolina Luau and the Puka Puka Luau. The rest are all fish or fish and chicken. (Page 21 of Dr. Lisa's list).

Can't comment on the Ziwipeak since Mikey is allergic to lamb, venison, and rabbit. ;-)

Rena,

Tried the Weruva here with my crew. They were not impressed; nor was I. just shredded chicken and not very much per can.

No experience with BBF.

How about an environmental allergy, rather than food. Are you using a different detergent, fabric softener? What about the pollens peculiar to spring? Is your air on?

Just some other things to think about. Merricks is a good quality food, and I.'m not sure that is the source of his skin allergy.

Are you by any chance using plastic food dishes? This has been known to cause "kitty acne," which sound like the little black bumps you were seeing on his chin.

My Clide (FD, lost to cancer in early March) was on the Merrick foods and loved it. It's difficult for me to know what's going on with Henry because he's only been with me for a little over three weeks. I took him when the owner was going to take him to a shelter on diagnosis. So I can't say. I haven't changed anything - and yes, I'll be sticking with the Merrick foods because frankly, he was underwhelmed with the Tiki stuff. So poo. I do have some the Merrick Before Grain varieties for him to try - also very good foods. No change to detergents or what have you.

My civvie gets acne (little black dirt specs) on her chin every so often. The vet should Recognise it. We had to change our food and water bowls to ceramic and sometimes we even use a soft soap wash and a topical cream.

My cats aren't the biggest fans of the Tiki stuff either. They like their food liquidy with a few chunks thrown in so what I do is use the Friskies SD Pâté mixed with water and use the Tiki Cat as the "chunks." It's also easier on my wallet that way because I know they're getting good, high protein food but I only go through a can a day. It's like making sure kids eat their vegetables.

My Chyna cat has trouble with scented products and now foods as well. I'm feeding Ziwipeak Lamb to test for food allergies in my kitty right now; so far, she likes it and I like what I read on their website about their foods :-D She really liked Weruva (all I tried was the Paw Lickin Chicken) too, but I think her allergy is to chicken and/or turkey so that's out for now and it's half the calories of the other foods I was feeding. She likes BFF too but with them all having fish I had to limit it to once or twice a week. Hope that info may have helped ;-)

I think Tiki cat and Weruva are on the same level of quality, Weruva might be a bit higher, but Tiki cat only has (as stated before) 2 flavors without fish.

BFF is Tuna based, so its Tuna and..... Like Fussie Cat.

Just an FYI, Weruva makes BFF and Cats in the Kitchen. Look for Cats in the Kitchen cans tho, the pouches are high carb.

The lower calorie issue may not be an issue with your cats. Depends on what their caloric intake has been. One can of Weruva is about 100 calories give or take.

And, going thru this right now, I am all for Weruva, but Baloo stopped eating it..but that was also when he was feeling yukky. I priced it out and Primal Raw is less costly for one cat than Weruva (if feeding a big cat). Stella and Chewys, one of the most expensive things on the planet, is actually around the same price as the Weruva (for one cat)..but again, depends on how much you need to feed...

My Boo had multiple environmental allergies. He had EGC. His best time of the year was Jan and Feb. He ended up going to a dermatologist and was getting allergy shots once a week for years. Is there any way you can contact the former pet parent to see if Henry had any problems in the past? I do know that any allergy can happen at any time.
