Flea prevention options

I get to get away for a few days next week and Howie is staying at the vet lodge. They require flea prevention which I’ve never given as he is solely inside and is an only “child”. Are there kinds/brands you recommend for a senior cat? Anything I need to know for his diabetes? Thank you!

Never heard of flea prevention being required for boarding. The more you know I guess!

Panic was on Comfortis, an oral flea pill. It didn't affect her diabetes any - in fact she liked them and thought they were a treat! She got really hot and bothered by topical variations.

I’ve not read anything good about the collars. I’m sure the combo meds are perfectly fine. I just don’t want to load him up in chemicals!

Someone else asked about flea collars a month ago, it was a chemical horror show. Long before breakaway collars were available I made a stupid mistake with Elmo, not one of my finer moments. Got home just in time and he lived another 17 years.

just occurred to me today. What if the lodge has it's own infestation and Howie brings fleas home. Then it will be your problem and there's no way to prove who's at fault.
When we boarded our dog we were asked about her "kennel cough" shot, it's the Bordetella vaccine. Noah was boarded at a vet, he was old and diabetic. I was sick every day of the trip (a memorial we could not put off) but Noah came home with good numbers and some extra weight.
Dogs are the worst manipulators, guilt is a powerful weapon. Then they eat your shoes, again.

I would board him at another vet that didn't require that. Phoenix has terrible reactions to the topical flea meds. His breathing and heart rate goes way up and he starts panting. It lasts almost 24 hours. Your vet might think your cat is just stressed and ignore it. That's what mine did the first time he had flea meds until it happened again.

Unfortunately I don’t have other options for kenneling and am gone too long for my friend who does help me out occasionally to come over to take care of him.

Will they let you purchase the flea med and put it on at home or does the vet want to do it. If they let you purchase and do it at home. I would say I have applied it and not do it.

Better to get the meds from a vet than anything from a big box store. Good luck Howie buddy.
