First Question - Glucose Readers - Which one?

I've been doing some research and I do want to start testing my cat Oyster, at home. I live in Alberta Canada and what Ive seen there seems to be three main testers being used: the Accuchek advantage with the curve comfort strips only, the Wal-Mart Relion Confirm tester and Bayer Ascensia Contour Meter. Any advise on if I should buy one of these or a different kind? Oyster seems to be a hard bleeder so I am looking for one that needs min blood. The pharmacist at Wal-Mart mentioned a Bayer product since its the only one currently on the Canadian market that allows for second testing on the same strip. Any advise on that one? :bookworm::cat::confused:
 
Thank you very much. I was also told the Accu Chek has been discontinued. The pharmacist really recommends the Bayer Contor Next as it allows for second chance reading, needs little blood and will help me not waste strips as I learn how much blood is needed. She also said it was personal preference as the strips are all the same price and the meters are all free
 
You can buy the strips on eBay at less than half the price at stores. (Apparently seniors sell off their extra strips). Just be sure the seller is reputable and the expiration dates work.

The other part of testing is to warm the ear. Lots of us use a rice sack (thinish sock filled with raw rice, knotted and warmed very warm in the microwave. Hold it up next to his ear for a minute or so to get the capillaries filled and plumped up.
 
I've always used a One Touch Ultra ever since, years ago, some kind person here gave me my first meter.
I've tried other meters over the years but have always come back to this one. Apparently there are other meters out there that take a smaller blood sample though. So, if you have trouble getting blood out of your kitty's ears one of those may suit you better.

Many test strips can be bought on Ebay much cheaper than they can be bought in the shops (sometimes half the price or less). Ebay has saved me a small fortune! :)

Welcome from someone a province over. If you buy the BD Syringes (I use the Ultrafine II), there is an offer inside the box for a free Bayer Contour Next meter and a box of 25 test strips.

Most pharmacies carry the Bayer Next. London Drugs, if you have one near you, occasionally has sales, though Ebay is probably the cheapest place to buy test strips.

Hmm those are the exact needles I have...do you like the Bayer Contour Next Wendy? Wal-Mart sells there testers free when you buy the test strips but free test strips for learning might be nice!
 
I do have a Bayer Contour as a backup meter, but not the Next model. I live close enough to the border that I got a Walmart Confirm and use those strips. The blood drop size is 0.3 so even better. London Drugs and Shoppers Drug Mart also do the "buy the strips, get a meter free deal". I suspect it's offered by the manufacturer.
 
I use a relion monitor from Walmart. It, as well as most monitors on the market are not calibrated to use on animals. However, watching the range of sugars lower and stabilize is okay for my cat. Her weight is stable, her coat not shiny, the dry skin has gone and her energy levels are great. She acts and plays like she use to. Her overall personality has mellowed and I am well pleased with the end result. I stick with the Relion because it is most cost-effective for my budget. The monitors available that are coded/calibrated for animals cost hundreds of dollar. My girl is now healthy and happy. Good luck from Jane and Stewey

Thanks Jane and Stewey. I would have loved to purchase Relion but its not sold in Wal-Marts in Canada. So glad your kitty is doing doing well! Cheers! :smuggrin:
