Well, Saul my new kitty is on week two of a diet change since he came home with me. I switched him cold turkey from dry generic Purina type food to Merrick Before Grain with no issues. It was confirmed he was diabetic with BG numbers in the 400's. He went back in 5 days later to start insulin and the vet saw it had gone down by half so he decided to hold off on the insulin and said to bring him back two weeks later.
In the meantime I have found this board and decided to test at home. The Relion Glucometer arrived and I did his first test today. Tried at lunchtime and failed miserably, like trying to get blood out of a turnip. Tonight it was the same and my frustration level was really growing. I had tried probably ten times on my poor kitties ears, used a warm rice sock, everything suggested.
Finally I took the lancet out of the pen and poked him and instant blood drop! Easy peasy. And... wait for it... HE'S AT 100!!!!
I know that I need to keep testing and will do a curve this Saturday but for now I am just walking on sunshine. I am grateful for all the info on here and if it keeps up this way I don't see why I need to bring him in for curves at the vet. I can monitor him at home and soon he'll be able to go under surgery to get his abscessed teeth removed which the vet said he can do once he's stabilized.
