Tabi's Dad

Hi All,

It's been a tough month. I haven't given Tabi insulin in 1 month. There was a period of time where he wasn't eating at all and the vet said give him anything he will eat. He's lost about 2lbs this month and is now 13lbs.

It has been a nightmare trying to draw blood from him. He is extremely aware when I try. I managed to practice on his biological sister and she doesn't even seem to feel the lancing or notice it. This made me further realize just how hypersensitive Tabi is. You would never guess they are siblings. Smokey's readings were in the 3.2mmol range.

Now today, I decided to give Tabi 100mg of Gabapentin, to mellow him out. It wasn't easy, but I managed to get 2 readings...finally...

6pm - 4.3mmol
10pm - 4.5mmol

On a good note, he totally fell asleep sprawled across my chest for a good hour. He is a total furbaby, always has been.

Where do I go from here? *sigh*

it’s good you got a couple of tests. It’s a start but not enough information to see what’s going on. Those tests are in the normal range. I don’t know what 6:00 and 10:00 mean. Here we talk in terms of hours after insulin or in your case after eating. So if 6 :00 is before dinner then 10:00 would be +4. What is he currently eating? Has his appetite returned to normal? If not what’s the cause? Losing weight quickly can cause fatty liver so it’s important he eat.

If it's been a month since he's last had insulin, and he's giving you normal blood glucose (BG) numbers, we'd consider him to be in diabetic remission. Congratulations! He's still a diabetic, so keep giving him the low carb food and try to avoid steroids for him if you can. Try to test monthly, and test if anything seems off. Dentals are probably the main reason a cats falls out of remission, so make sure he gets a dental if needed, as well as regular vet checks.
He's lost about 2lbs this month and is now 13lbs.
What weight does the vet want him at? Sometimes a switch to a low carb diet will mean they lose weight. It helped my second kitty who was overweight when I adopted him from the shelter. But as Elise said, you want them to lose weight slowly.

Hi all. I would like to thank you so much for all the help, advice and support you have given me and Tabi. I'm sorry for not responding, but Tabi got really sick. He passed away in my arms. I'm still grieving and my place is so quiet and a bit empty now without his presence. I really miss his cat hugs and his super loud purrs. The day he passed he gave me the slow blinks and I gave them back to him. I hope he knows how much I loved and still love him. He is now my GA. He is survived by his biological sister Smokey from the same litter. Thank you all once again.
