Hello,
Clovis was diagnosed with diabetes in December, yesterday (Sunday, 1/23/11) I did my first at-home Glucose Curve. He has been to the vet once a week for a few weeks, but only stays there around 7-8 hours. I read on this website that a full curve is 12 hours? The vet currently has me giving him ProZinc, 3 in the am and 3 pm. I wanted to post the results in case anyone has any advice, it's new and still stressful. I'm not sure how to create a spreadsheet for him so I apologize for just listing it below. Thanks again, I really appreciate everything. Also, was I testing him at the correct times?
7:30 a.m. - 453
8:00 a.m. - 3 units Prozinc
10:00a.m. - 339
12:00p.m. - 282
2:00 p.m. - 367
4:00p.m. - 401
6:00 p.m. - 410
8:00 p.m. - 423
(After the BG test I gave him his 2nd Prozinc shot, 3units)

Hi Jill,

Great that you are hometesting and got a curve in. It seems to be pretty high and generally flat. I am wondering if it might be rebound since you started on a fairly high dose. We like to see newbies start at one unit twice daily and work up. Here is the info on rebound: Rebound

Contact me and we can get your spreadsheet set up. What you posted today is fine. The spreadsheet just gives us the color coding and is such a nice tool to have.

Hi Jill,

I just wanted to chime in and let you know that my cat, Sylvan, has a similar history. He was recently diagnosed in December and on 1/8 was prescribed 3 units of Prozinc twice a day. My numbers are high too. The lowest they get is 216 and I'm not sure what to do. Believe it or not, I did see an improvement when I went a little light with the shot ( a low of 216 compared to 263 ). I will start a new post with his spreadsheet. It helps to know there is another cat going through the same thing. And yes, it is very frustrating.

Thanks,
Liz

Also I wanted to mention that since Clovis has started taking his insulin shots he is much more active, he seems happy. He used to just sit on my bed all day and be lazy.

Hello everyone,

My cat has high numbers as well, all the time. I'd like to start a spreadsheet too but I don't know how to do one... We are now giving her 6 units of Lantus twice a day which seems incredibly high. I haven't done a curve yet, but I feel like I should soon in case she's having a dip that I'm unaware of.

Just an update ladies. Jill is recovering from surgery herself but reports that Clovis is doing great and is more active than he has been in the past, playing like a kitten! :) Whoohoo!

I also wanted to note that back in November vettybean started Clovis on 1U and has worked him up to his current dose of 3.5U.

Anyhow once Ms. Jill recovers I am sure she'll be back online to update everyone. I just thought you would all like an update.

There is about a 175 point drop. To me that is not generally flat. Thus, it is not clear if there is rebound.

Celia and Jill,

Thanks for the update. I was wondering. Jill, so glad you found supportive help in Houston. But sorry you have been sick. Celia, so glad you are there to help support with the kitty stuff.

Larry, you are right. I should have said it looks like high flat numbers that could be due to too much insulin. Not rebound. Senior moment.

Hi everyone :)
Thanks so much for caring about me and Mr. Clovis :) I'm feeling a lot better, I've been taking good care of Clovis but just haven't felt well enough to send messages out yet. Last week Clovis was in the 400's before his shots and he'd get down into the high 200's midday. Monday I started him (and the other 4 I have) on new wet food, I tried quite a few but he seems to love the wet version of:
Royal Canin Feline Health Nutrition Special 33
I have the same food, dry, that I'm slowly switching out for the other 4 although eventually I'd love to figure out a way I could feed all 5 wet food (w/o them going crazy and fighting each other for the food) :)
Does anyone have any experience with that food? I've also heard fancy feast has some good wet food? Royal is really expensive, but I'll do anything for them.
I also made him some home cooked chicken from a recipe I found on here, he eats a little bit of it.

Well the good news is that this morning (after the gradual food change), Clovis bg was 280 :) I know it's high but he's been in the 400's forever, I'm surprised it changed so fast. I was afraid to give him his full 3.5 dose of Prozinc so I just gave him 3. Also, he went on my patio yesterday and bounded around (he never does that), and then he climbed a tree! He hasn't climbed a tree since he was......well, he's never climbed a tree :) I'm going to check his bg a lot this weekend b/c I don't want to give him too much insulin. Do you think 3 units is too much if he's in the upper 200's? The only thing my vet told me was "if he gets near 100 we're in trouble". Thanks (roll eyes).

Thank you again to everyone, I promise you'll hear more from me.
ps. And Clovis says thanks too, he attached a little fancy gift for you. :)

Welcome back Jill! It is so hard to give dosing advice without a spreadsheet. Think you and I could get together and put it up? I will be home tonight after 7pm my time. Do you still have my number?

Just as a general rule, 3 units at 280 is a fairly high dose. If you have recently changed to wet, I would be cautious with dosing. The wet lo carb can really make a difference, suddenly.

I don't see the Royal Canin Health Nutrition special on the food chart: http://binkyspage.tripod.com/CanFoodNew.html In general, Royal Canin seems to run from a low of 8 to a high of 18, depending on the flavor.
