I'm a little late with this news, but Sab got his first shot of insulin last night! We went to see Dr. Vicky in the afternoon so she could show me what to do. Giving him the shot was easy; its testing his sugar that I'm no fan of doing. I hate poking his dainty ear :*( He meowed once but other than that he stayed still for me, though he did slap me with his tail lol
His scan was 150 last night prior to his insulin. He's on Lantus SolorStar 1u BID
This morning I tested his sugar & he was 156. I gave him his insulin. I called the vet office late morning to ask about giving him insulin when his numbers are so low. The vet was as shocked as I was that his numbers were so low. (His diagnosing blood draw was 640! The only change, prior to starting insulin, was changing him from a dry food diet to a wet food diet.) So I made an appointment to bring him in the afternoon so they could check his sugar, just in case. I rescanned his blood at 11:30 and it was at 70.
I had to take myself to the doctor. When I returned mid afternoon, I discovered that some cat puked all over my bed. My other cat is the hairball tosser. It doesn't take much for her to toss her cookies. I've never seen Sab throw up, and my other cat doesn't usually puke unless she's just inhaled her meal without chewing it. I hoped that it was she that got sick, and not Sab.
At nearly 5pm today, at the vet, Sab's scan was still at 70. Once again, the vet wanted to test his urine but his bladder was empty. The vet took him off insulin for the next couple days. We return Friday morning for another blood scan & hopefully he'll have a full bladder.
The vet is mystified on why he still has all his symptoms (increased thirst, urine output, food aggression; weight loss) and yet his numbers have plummeted. It is worth noting that since his diagnosis 2 weeks ago, he's lost 3/4 lb of weight. I did notice last night that he picked a fight with my other cat, which is one of his pastimes. She reacts so strongly to his play (she's a dramatic calico) and usually I scold him for beating her up. Last night, though, I was happy to hear the squabble. Since not feeling well, he's not bothered her.
