first days on Lantus. Numbers rising...what should I expect?

I don't want to be a nervous nelly, but is it normal to see a slow but steady rise in bg numbers when starting insulin? We're nearly 48 hours in and Levon's numbers are moving up.
I have been occasionally checking his BG since he was dx'd for practice, and now we're climbing way above where he was as an untreated sugar cat.
His untreated numbers hovered in the upper 300s (380).
Is this to be expected? Am I fretting for no reason?
He's not stressed at all (napping most of the day) and the BG draws have gone smoothly....
Thanks to FortaFlora, he ate a bit more today than usual, llike half a 3 oz can. Seems like an extra .5oz of low carb wet shouldn't make much of a difference.
Fwiw, he seems fine...moving from napping spot to napping spot and seeking affection.

That is a little abnormal but it takes takes days for Lanutsu to have full effect. How much is Levon eating per day now?
Was Levon losing weight?

Re: first days on Lantus. Numbers rising...what should I exp

He is eating very little...about 2-3 oz of wet and some dry EVO per day (less than 1/4 cup). We transitioned from dry to wet when he was dx'd and it was hard. We had him up to 6 oz wet per day til he got a UTI and things went pear shaped. He's recovering from the UTI and is still feeling cruddy (we're on the second course of antibiotics while awaiting culture results). He has been losing weight slowly foe some time...he was never an overweight guy.

Skooter took a bit of time to regulate and did a little up and down at first.

The frustrating part, especially in the beginning is that we do all this research and educate ourselves and our sweet sweet sugar cats just don't read the material of what they are supposed to do!

I am fairly new to this dance as well, but it is possible that Levon is going a bit lower during his cycle and he is bouncing. His body is used to higher BG readings being "normal", so when the insulin helps him go lower his body goes on alert thinking something is wrong because it considers that high number low, if that makes sense. To compensate for that perceived low number, their body starts to produce insulin so that it can "regulate" to what it THINKS is normal numbers.

As you move along in the process you will notice that his body will start recognizing that the numbers it thinks is high is not and slowly but surly learn to "accept" the lower numbers. When I first started it was suggested that I can readings sporadically throughout Skooter's AM and PM cycles, that way you can start seeing trends in his cycles as well as maybe explain some higher numbers (if he goes "low").

Feel free to take a peak at Skooter's spreadsheet....he started all over the place and now is really starting to do well. I will say, the dry food, as little that is included can also make more of a difference than you think. Skoots was up to 5u BID, once he went to part wet/part dry he went down to 4u BID and when he was transitioned completely to wet, he went to 2u BID. He has done a little up and down, but currently we are back to the starting point of 1u BID hoping it will work.

Lantus is a depot insulin so when we first start, you have to give the same dose every 12 hours for 5-7 days (10-14 cycles) to "fill the depot" before you start seeing the real results

It looks like you're home testing, and that's great! It doesn't look like Levon is bouncing, but anything is possible. At this point, I'd say it's just too soon to tell

Since you weren't testing prior to starting insulin, it's also possible his numbers could have been 600+ so even getting a 400 is better

Give it some more time and lets see where he's at in a few more days

Antibiotics can do a number on the cat's GI tract.

You may find that giving a probiotic such as Forti Flora or Intelliflora (see the shopping link above and once in there, go to Amazon - it helps support the board), a couple hours after the antibiotic will help the appetite.
