Good Morning Everyone,
I tried to give my kitty Annie her first blood glucose test this morning, I freaked out and good thing my husband was able to do it. Now all I need is for someone to translate.
The reading was 305 before any shots or any food. Today she is refusing to eat ANY soft wellness food, so we gave her some hard food kitten science diet and some evo, as I am typing this she decided to eat some soft wellness food as well Yeah!!! So do we need to check her blood glucose level again later today.
She was diagnosed on 1-8-11 and right now she is on 1 unit of lantus. She has received 5 insulin shots all together.
Thank you everyone for all your help!!!!
Judy and Annie

Are you at home during the day and can test her every third hour?

Then you write the chart like this

amps

+3

+6

+9

pmps

That is 12 hours, and gives you an idea what numbers she has on the given insulin dose throughout the day.

Hurray! Welcome to the Vampire Club! :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

305 is a normal number for a beginning diabetic. Now, try to get a test around 6 hours from this am shot.

The next step is to set up a spreadsheet so you can keep track of the numbers you are getting. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18207. It will be a valuable tool for you and us. if you need help with it, just ask.

Mixing the dry with the wet is fine at first. Start increasing the wet and decreasing the dry until it is all wet.

Good job! You are on your way!

The other point I'll add is that you should then test her at 12 hours post shot. If she's back to approximately the same level, you know she will need two shots a day (I pretty much guarantee she will) and she should get a second shot then. By giving only one shot a day, you are losing any momentum you may have started in the first half of the day and you won't get far.

Hi Everyone,
I can not thank you enough for all the help that I am receiving regarding my little Annie girl. Well we just did another BG draw
it was 6 hours after the insulin shot so I think I have to write it like this AMPS +6 is that correct??? So Annie's reading now is 311.
She right now is on 1 unit of lantus in the morning so we have two readings:
305 -- before food and before the shot
311 -- +6 (after the shot in the morning)
Can someone explain to me what this means?? Also is it okay to give her little treats when we test her??? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Judy and Annie

Right now it means little because you don't have any other days to compare it to. It could mean that she is having little response to the lantus. This may be in part due to the fact that she's on it only once a day. Have you read the info yet on how lantus works? Very important....see the insulin support groups, lantus...
