Eli was just diagnosed in May. 2 units twice a day. Prozinc. He ate at 515pm, 2 units at that time. Just checked his blood for the first time with relion human glucometer and it was 295. He was in the low 400s when he was first diagnosed. What do we need to do. Is the insulin still working now?

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Well done getting your first BG test done! Fantastic!
For us to be able to help you and tell you how well the insulin is working, we need to be able to see more data.
What I would suggest is that you set up a spreadsheet of ours and start adding in all of the blood glucose tests you do. That way we will be able to tell how well Eli is doing.
HELP US HELP YOU has the link to the spreadsheet, the signature and the hypo box as well as other useful information.

With Prozinc you test/feed and shoot in that order.
Are you offering snacks during the first half of all the cycles as well?
Here are two links to using Prozinc

Thank you! While I was waiting for a reply, I read that it the curve is the best way to see whats going on. So we will try that tomorrow. I will test in the morning before food, then have my daughter do it ..or try to every 2 hours. He is a two dose a day cat. I'm overly excited how well he was. I did offer him turkey deli meat while I pricked his ear. We have 6 other cats and have been trying to figure out the best time to put the hard food up, since its the devil for eli. I am more confident now tho, we get his blood sugar in check! I will post more information when I have it. I love this site. Thank you!!

Yes a curve is a good way of seeing how things are going as long as your kitty isn’t bouncing, which a lot of cats do. But you have to start somewhere. getting a before shot test in every time and at least one test in during each cycle sometime between +4 and +7 (vary it) will tell us a lot. also if you see a low BG always test again later to see he is not dropping further.
Your insulin must be 6 months old now so could be getting to it’s use by date.
All cats need 2 doses of insulin a day 12 hours apart because they have a faster than humans metabolism.
When testing the BG always offer a treat….deli meat is probably not the best option as it can be salty but whatever works for you as long as it’s not high carb.
Have you thought about getting rid of all dry food for all the cats? It’s very bad for all cats.
What are you feeding Eli?

Thank you. What do you mean by +4 or +7? Hours? We will test before shots from now on. He gets fancy feast pate. We tried the prescription food he didn't eat it. He loves fish and shrimp fancy feast. A chart online said it had 0 carb. I try to make sure what we buy has less than 7 carb per can. He never eats the whole can. He loves turkey deli meat, i also boil chicken for him. I need to make a plan to remove the hard food altogether for sure. 2 of my 7 eat that the most. Eli only nibbles. I hope I can regulate his BG and give him a healthy rest of his life. He's only 7.

+4 is 4 hours after the insulin shot. +7 is 7 hours after the insulin shot.
As we all live in different parts of the world (I am in Australia) we use the + hours after insulin when talking about where we are in the cycle.
Definitely you want to get him regulated and back on the path to healthy living especially if he’s only 7.

Thank you for clarifying!

No, I only have 3 entries so far. I was trying to say more but then hit reply lol. (At work) so after this morning, I asked my daughter who is almost 30 and its her cat lol to test him at the 4hr mark.. well she had an issue, he moved she slit is ear a little and it was too much for her. **deep breath** anyway. I'll test again at the 7hr mark, which will his dinner time and I'll do the 4hr mark after that.

Then I can send what I have so you guys can help me. I'm feeling overwhelmed.

It is overwhelming in the beginning but you are doing well!!
Okay. I need to send the file to myself because its on my little computer. 12/14 before meals he was 465, 4 hours after was 295 and dinner feeding was 335. We have taken away all dry food, even for the other cats and increased his insulin to 2.5 units, with our vets approval. Before meals in the morning he has been steadily going down. I will upload the sheet when I get a moment.

The 2.5 units and no dry food has made a world of difference already. He is gaining weight, drinking less frequently, is playing more..it is just wonderful.

I am glad you are seeing results. I will look forward to seeing your spreadsheet. If you need help with it, just let us know.
