Finky Feline will only eat chunk wet foods.

Hey guys been trying to keep our newest member to the family on a healthy diet.
Unfortunately its become a problem.
When he first showed up he ate all the Wellness I threw at him. However it seems that the pate' style foods are not to his liking.
I have a case of Evangers Chicken he wont even look at.
He wont eat Merrick either for some reason.
The last thing he was eating was Taste of the Wild. He turned his nose up at that about 2 weeks ago.
The only thing he likes now is the Solid gold Tuna. Which I dont like giving him all the time due to possible toxins.
Unfortunately I have been forced to supplement with Core, EVO or Instinct kibbles as they are the lowest carb. Def not to my liking.

I would like to note that Silky was on his own for a year and a half. He eats far less store bought food than a cat his size should be. A 6lb bag of kibble lasts about 2 months. So he isnt consuming a lot at a time.
He is a voracious eater of rodents. Eats everything up to and including squirrels. Which is fine. Best diet he could have. I just have to bring him to vets more often to keep him parasite free.

So my question is does anybody know of any chunk non seafood, grain free, low carb cat foods out there?

I am going to see about pricing on Instinct Freeze Dried Raw.

Thank you.

Grammy's Pot Pie is pretty chunky. I actually avoid chunky because I've a few who'll vomit from texture.
Some of the Tikki cat are chunky, albeit pricey. Pro Plan turkey is a mince, so it has some texture. Spitzer liked the Pro Plan.

Doesnt like Grammy either.

I will check Tikki. Apparently Halo, BFF and Weruva are said to have chunk. Any experience there?

Fancy Feast Chunky (Chicken, Turkey, and another one...mixed grill?) is below the 10% threshhold and is, well, chunky. It sounds like you feed really good quality food, so I'm not sure if you're interested in Fancy Feast. Might be worth trying out, though?

Agree on the Merrick. Both the Grammy's Pot Pie and Turducken are fish free and chunky. My cats don't really care for it, unfortunately.

The BFF is fairly chunky/stringy. Definitely not pate. I don't think they have any that don't have fish, though.

i actually feed my civvie molly wellness pate style, wellness sells a chunk style brand in chicken and turkey in a minced, cubed and sliced that i sometimes mix in with the pate just to give her a mixture in texture and so no boredom sets in, i am not sure of carb content though since i do not have to be as vigilent since patches has been gone.

hope this helps a little

Merrick Cowboy Cookout is somewhat chunky and low carb. My cat Wink only liked it for a couple of meals though, and then wanted some thing different. ohmygod_smile

I use the Tiki Cat for the chunks. My cats love it, but not by itself, so I mix it with some water and a "chunkier" pâté (the Friskies Special Diet is not as "whipped" as other Pâtés). They like it the consistency of a really thick and chunky milkshake. It's taken me a while to find the right consistency for them and even then, I have to combine foods to get it right.

This food is too soft said the kitty cat. This food is too hard said the kitty. This food is just right, chunky milkshake!

We don't spoil our kitties too much do we! ;-)

Well, it's not like our spoiling is going to make them grow up to be sociopaths or anything. haha_smiley

Thanks guys.
This should save me a lot of trial an error on buying different foods to see what has chunks.
Please keep the suggestions coming.

One thing I have always done is keep a bowl of wet next to the dry. He eats out of both and drinks water. So while the kibble is a concern I believe eating the wet with it will help in limiting the dehydration problem associated with dry. Not a perfect solution I know.
Like mentioned previously he catches the majority of his meals and snacks on store bought.

I believe the biggest problem is that he does not like all the licking that pate requires. He seems to prefer chewing.
When he eats a rodent there is nothing left. Except the occasional stomach.

Of course I tried him on fresh cooked chicken and raw chicken and he turned his nose up at that. I was very surprised at at that.
Well except one night when I was eating baked chicken in front of the TV and he jumped onto my lap and into my dinner plate.

Just put him on the scale today. He is maintaining his 14+ lean pounds. So he is eating something somewhere. We had a talk about proper dinner etiquette

Avoderm Chicken Chunks in Gravy (http://www.avodermnatural.com/Cat_Foods ... chunks.htm). Though the name says "gravy", it's really more like juice or jelly, and it's listed on Dr. Lisa's chart as having 8 carbs.

Locally Earth Fare carries Avoderm.
I'll give that a try.
I dont like carrageenan though.

Just tried him on Weruva's Grandmas Chicken Soup. To many carbs for my liking. Luckily he didnt seem impressed with that one.

Fancy Feast is what caused all my problems with Kitty. I am kind of gun shy at feeding our new furry friend any of it.

He just ate a Grammy's the other day. He gobbled it down the first time and was not impressed the second time. I have not tried the Turducken yet.

I fed Baloo Weruva's Paw Lickin' Chicken for a little bit. He started off crazy about it but eventually gave up chewing and just licked up the juices. You might have better luck since your kitty seems to like chunky. It's definitely on the pricey side and fairly low calorie though, so not the best choice if you have a big kitty like me!

...May I ask what problems exactly the fancy feast caused? ( I ask because that is what I am feeding Frog atm)

Every cat is different. Frog may be fine with the food.
Some cats are sensitive to poultry; some are not.
Some are sensitive to rice; some are not.
ditto with fish, beef, lamb, pork, corn, gluten, peas, potatoes, and so on.

Also, any time you change foods, transition slowly to reduce the chances of digestive upset.

Diabetes and the tumor that killed him.
Fancy Feast and the dry food that were his steady diet for most of his life.
My opinion mind you. However the conclusion is drawn by the evidence. Its only foods he ever ate.

He loved the foods that were in gravy. And we all know how many carbs that stuff has. I wish I wasnt so ignorant about pet foods at the time. If I had been more educated I am quite sure he would still be with me. He had no signs of aging, arthritis, hearing loss or loss of sight. He was quite spry and nimble until the last 2 months.

something else you could try that may work is Stella and Chewys freeze dried dinners

http://www.stellaandchewys.com/cat-products.php

the cheapest online place I found it is http://www.petfood.com/item/stella-and- ... od/498360/

I buy the chicken dinner, but you can see it comes it many flavors - bound to be one he likes

you can serve this dry or with water added.

Funny you should mention Stella. Was just looking at that today. $22.00 a bag. A bit pricey for the amount you get. He is 14lbs so he would require 5 pellets a day I believe.
I might get the snack bags though.

I know he like rabbit. He brought one in the house and ate it today.

Maybe you should just let him get his own food, then!

...Actually, have you considered making your own cat food? You might also consider some non-poultry meats, like the Nature's Variety that have rabbit and venison and are low carb. Maybe those would appeal to Silky's discerning taste?

Funny you should say that.
He was not happy with the Halo selections last night and today so he got his own breakfast. Another vole bights the dust.
He def does not like pate'.

Have not tried N.V. yet. Do you know if it is chunk or pate'?

Well I know he doesn't like chicken or chicken parts fresh or canned.

Nature's Variety is more chunky like the Merrick's or the FF Chunky.

Another one I just thought of with different types of proteins is ZiwiPeak, although I haven't tried any of their foods so I can't comment on the texture (Mikey is allergic to all of them).

I know the Prairie is stew like.
However I see no information about carbs anywhere.
That line contains sweet potato, Oats and potato starch. Some have rice as well.

Do you know if the Instinct line is chunk or pate'?

Hmmm.
Closest retailer of of Ziwi is 60 miles away.

Hey guys I just got my hands on a Blue Buffalo product guide.
It has pictures of all their products.

They all should do that.

We used to use a premix called Feline Instincts that you are supposed to add raw meat to, for our allergic cat (we used Wysong Duck Au Jus because she was also eating some dry so I wasn't as worried about the nutrient balance being thrown off... anyway, it's a long story). If you could find some cheap cuts of raw meat, this could be an affordable option that you could customize the "chunkiness," but I understand it's not easy when the cat doesn't like chicken. Maybe turkey? In general it seems like raw is going to be your best bet with this cat if you can afford it.

The Primal brand frozen raw foods have a fairly chunky texture, sort of like a tough hamburger although of course I haven't TRIED them  , but they're expensive, unfortunately.

Well. I just learned that Silky likes Copperhead.
Ate a bit more than half of a 3 footer. Starting at the head.

Part mongoose. Part feline. Oh boy!!

OMG!

I'm going to assume you've checked every inch of him for bites, while crossing your fingers!

He was fine.
Recently he brought me a flying squirrel and a full grow rabbit.

Still have not had much luck with the canned food though. He settled on Taste of the Wild.
Cant seem to find any as fed info on it though.

Hey Sev, nice to see you back. I'm sure someone has suggested making raw?
Thanks Sue.
I try to check in occasionally.

He wont do it.
I've tried chicken and turkey raw and he turns his nose up at it. I attribute it to the live catch he is eating.

The big plus is that he eats so much wild caught every day that anything that he eats from the bowl is miniscule and is flushed from his system rapidly.

I need to get him away from the Taste of the wild because it has fish in it.
I am going to try some of the new Wellness sliced and chunk that has come out. Going to be looking for some as fed on the signature line. I have not seen any as fed info on it as of yet.

Alright.
I just tried him on a new line of Wellness that showed up at our new Petsense store.

Cubed chicken Entre'e. So far he is gobbling it down.
If its the same Cubed Chicken on the 2012 food chart it should only have 9 carbs.
I am hoping that the only thing that changed was the label name.

I tried him on the Sliced Chicken Entree and Minced Turkey Entree. Nope. Didnt want any part of it.
He tasted the slice chicken once and turned his nose up at the turkey.
All the ingredients are very similar. I am thinking he sensitive to the aroma.

Anyway I am keeping my fingers crossed. I am more comfortable with Wellness than taste of the wild as there is information on it.
Not to mention getting him away from a daily dose of seafood.

great - just keep an eye on his BG since any food change can cause a difference!

Sorry if there is any confusion in this thread. Silky isnt diabetic.
I am doing preventative care. Trying to minimize the chemicals and carbs in his diet.
He is young, healthy and no problems as of yet.
I am hoping to make sure he never has to go through what Kitty went through and just has a long happy healthy life.

After all while treating diabetes is of utmost importance when it occurs. Taking steps from preventing it from occurring in the first place should be a priority as well.
