Hi! I have been looking after my parents' cat Tibby Tabby as they are older and not able to give her the level of care she needs. However, I frequently travel between Ontario and New Brunswick so I am not a great home for her either. I am going to be headed to another province for a month next Wednesday, and considering my options.

My parents will take her again while I am gone, but they are not able to home test her. I am thinking of reducing her dose slightly from where she is at now for safety, and because my parents were dosing her with an insulin pen in whole units and I don't think they will be able to manage a syringe. She is at 6.5 units, so this would mean reducing her to 6 units and having them hold that dose. My sister who lives an hour away from them can come by once a week to test, and she can likely stay for a couple of hours around her nadir and test a couple of times if need be.

My parents have 6 other cats as well as as other animals and it's a lot for them to manage, so I wish I had better options. What do others do to get care for diabetic kitties when they are away? and any advice for finding a good long-term home for a sweet and lovable diabetic kitty? Thoughts on my dosing approach?

Thanks for any advice!

That’s probably the best option to reduce to 6 units and for your parents to use the pen.
Will they be able to feed her her normal low carb food and give her the snacks she is used to?
Will she eat well at your parents?
I would make sure they have a hypo box set up and know what to do in case of low numbers.
HERE is information about hypos and a hypo box. I would print this off and put it on your parents fridge..

Yeah, I will provide them with a supply of the food I am feeding her now and her treats. Their other cats eat dry food, and they are not the best at remembering to keep it from her, so I'm going to ask that she be kept in a separate part of the house. Good idea on the hypo instructions.

Here is the food chart also
https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/dr-pierson-new-food-chart.174147/ to look for medium and high carb food in case he drops to low and you have to bring his BG up
Most of us feed Fancy Feast Pate
I'm pretty sure you can get them in Canada
Here are some med and high carb foods
Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Gourmet Beef Feast in Gravy 20% High Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Gourmet Chicken Feast in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Turkey Feast in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Chicken and Beef in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Good idea to mark the cans with magic marker how many carbs
Or any others that you see on the food chart I gave you

Is it possible to take her with you? There are several members that travel with their cat.

I am not sure about this because she didn't travel well on the 3-hour drive from my parents' to here - she was stressed and panting the whole time, and wouldn't eat or drink. This would be a 14-hour drive and she'd have to do it again in a month. Then she'd be in a new house and there's another cat there that I don't know how she'd react to as she doesn't really like other cats... my parents' is at least a known quantity.

The vet that you take her to, maybe you can ask a vet tech there is/she would be willing to come and test him when she can, after work, or if they may know of someone who can

My cat Neko hated car travel, complained the whole way to her vet's office - 10 minutes away. We had to take her to Colorado for treatment for her acromegaly, it was three days of car travel, 9 hours each day. There and back. Between Feliway spray in the carrier, Rescue Remedy drops before hand to start the day, we made it. After the first hour or two, she figured out we weren't going to the vet. (little did she know!!) Anyway, she eventually calmed down and after that long trip was much more comfortable for car rides. I later even took her on a plane trip.

In case you want to consider it, one member put together a document on travelling with diabetic kitties.

Have you contacted the local human society or some of the local rescues to see if they have ideas or temporary fosters for special needs cats?
