Hi! I have been looking after my parents' cat Tibby Tabby as they are older and not able to give her the level of care she needs. However, I frequently travel between Ontario and New Brunswick so I am not a great home for her either. I am going to be headed to another province for a month next Wednesday, and considering my options.
My parents will take her again while I am gone, but they are not able to home test her. I am thinking of reducing her dose slightly from where she is at now for safety, and because my parents were dosing her with an insulin pen in whole units and I don't think they will be able to manage a syringe. She is at 6.5 units, so this would mean reducing her to 6 units and having them hold that dose. My sister who lives an hour away from them can come by once a week to test, and she can likely stay for a couple of hours around her nadir and test a couple of times if need be.
My parents have 6 other cats as well as as other animals and it's a lot for them to manage, so I wish I had better options. What do others do to get care for diabetic kitties when they are away? and any advice for finding a good long-term home for a sweet and lovable diabetic kitty? Thoughts on my dosing approach?
Thanks for any advice!
