This morning he is at 112 !! So I chose not to shoot even a .5 U dose. I feel like that is to risky. I am also going out of town today for 2 weeks. I have to take two classes towards my Masters, so dh will be in charge. I've left detailed instructions and told him that he could post in here. I am hoping that Ferdi is on his way to regulating! :)

It is looking that way! (anti jinx). I would not ever shoot below 170 and then only if I was going to be around to monitor and I was sure he was headed up. Tell DH to post on Health if no one is around here.

If he can eat small frequent meals, that usually helps support the pancreas.

Good luck and safe travels!

Thanks! Ferdi still has not had any insulin.:) This morning his bg was 96! DH said he has been feeding him the small meals about 4 each day. Really excited about this.:)
Is it pretty typical that cats can go into remission from diabetes? I have heard of it happening but wasn't sure if it was common. I have never heard of it in people.

We are lucky that it does happen in felines! I'd say it varies - some people make the diet change and the cat's numbers are normal.. Some people with the diet change give insulin in the 3-6 month range and the cat becomes diet controlled. Some cats require insulin for years and even all their lives. It's that ECID thing (every cat is different)

I hope Ferdinand is one of the lucky ones!

Humans can't heal their pancreas beta cells, dogs can't heal their pancreas beta cells.

Only cats can. So amazing.

How wonderful for you all.

To call it official he needs to be without insulin for 14 days (anti jinx), between 40 & 120. Then we throw him a party.

Keep us posted with how he is doing on his OTJ trial. We like to cheer people on. I have some wonderful pictures for each number and some horrible rhymes. So, if I counted right, today 6/11 would be day number 3 on the OTJ trial.

Ferdinand, stay down in the cool green grass, and you might not need anymore shots in your a**!

 Cute!

So far Ferdinand is 7 days without insulin! Dh says however that he has had a little diarrhea and that he seems to be kind of sore. I am currently out of town and won't be back until next weekend. That just doesn't sound normal to me.

Ferdinand is at OTJ day lucky number 7, and then pretty soon day 11.

So Dh tells me that Ferdinand has been holding steady for the last few days betwen 66-99. I just can't believe it!! I'm really hoping this holds out. It would be wonderful for his diabetes to go into remission.

Today is day 13 for Ferdinand's OTJ trial if I counted right.

Congratulations on Day 13 OTJ trial for Ferdinand. :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

So happy for you and Ferdinand. You give me hope! Since it has been since March and now he is coming around, I am so thrilled for you both! YAY!

Yes today is day 13! Really happy about that. However we won't be having any kind of party as tragically we have to put our 13 year old dog down tomorrow. He is dying of heart disease.

I have to leave early in the morning so I can drive the 4 hours home and be there to help him cross over.

I am very thankful and grateful however that in the midst of this Ferdinand is doing so well. DH says he seems to feel really good and has been playful! We haven't seen that out of him in ages. I think it is a testimony really to how healthy canned food is for cats and how very unhealthy the dry food is.

So sorry to hear that you need to put your 13 year old dog to sleep. Heart disease is tough.

Lighting a candle for your dog. What's his name?

Well we ended up waiting a couple of days to put Mojo down. I took him yesterday. He was doing ok so I wanted a couple of extra days with him. It was hard but at least he isn't suffering anymore.

On a positive note, Ferdinand is doing great! His numbers have been below 100 consistently!! :-D I think we can safely say his diabetes is in remission? So now how often should I be checking his bg levels? I am so thankful for this. I prayed for this to happen.

:YMHUG: It's never easy losing them. Fly free Mojo.

Congratulations to you and Ferdinand, he is officially OTJ.

Just remember, once a diabetic always a diabetic. He will need to stay on a low carb wet food diet for life.

As for testing you should test once a week for the first month, then every other week for a while and once a month after that.

Please post your story in the Recent Remissions thread at the top of this forum, it will help new members on their own new journey to see that it is possible and how you did it.

Yes we plan on keeping him on his low carb wet food. I will post our story soon. What does OTJ stand for?

Thanks,
Melody
